I just started watching this story and can't help but feel like this is kind of a sequel to the original story.

The opening scene shows a daughter and mother who are slashed up, and the doll is in the oven, charred up, which is exactly how the original story left off.

I just saw the first movie not too long ago, so I'm not very informed on these movies, but is this intended to be a continuation of the original story?

Yes, I believe it is a continuation of the first one, although the apartment is completely different.

Yes, it is intended to be a continuation of the original story. It could almost be a remake, too. Many scenes are exactly the same as the doll story in the first movie. It even ends the same way. So I count it as a sequel and remake both at the same time.
