Why did they remake 'Bobby'?

I will never understand why they remade "Bobby". The first one was so good and it scared me even though I was 13 and had been watching horror movies/shows all my life.

The "Dead of Night" version of "Bobby" was sooooooooooooo good.

I couldn't agree more, didopixie. Go to "Edge of Night" and see my/our comments.

The first "Bobby" was in the horror trilogy "Dead of Night" (1977).
It scared the hell out of me as a kid. This is a very similar version.

I just want to thank you for posting that question. Quick story: When I was a kid (and I can't quite pinpoint the exact age) my brother and I came across a show on TV we were able to identify as "Bobby", but never got the "Dead of Night" part. We were staying at my grandmother's house and up much later than we were supposed to be in our room--what better scenario to be scared out of your wits? Anyway, it did indeed scare the living beejezus out of us but it has always remained as something like a dream as neither of us has been able to figure out what it was or where it came from. Various internet searches for "Bobby" proved fruitless. Anyway, recently I found the Trilogy of Terror II in a "Bobby" search but was mystified by the 1996 release date. Your note cleared up my frustrating confusion. Now I can get on with my life, but not until after I've bought a copy and scared the crap out of my brother again for old times' sake.....

I'm glad they remade it. The original is one I think many will look upon with feelings of nostalgia resulting from being terrified by it as a kid. Upon re-visiting I suspect many will be disappointed.

I will make a confession, I look upon the remake in the same nostalgia manner because it came out when I was a kid! Hence my defensive posture and my bias.

The remake IMO is better than the original. And I can think of many reasons when looking at the two versions back-to-back. IMO, the pacing in the remake is better, the build-up is subtler, Lysette Anthony makes for a better protagonist, the lighting and camera effects are more atmospheric and when blending in with everything else ensure that the story packs a real punch. Finally I think Bobby was more menacing in the updated version. The scene where Bobby pretends not to have noticed his mother as he looks out of the bedroom window whilst his mother hides comes across as much less contrived.

The original does however have better make-up effects for the demonic Bobby IMO.

However, the real Kudos must go to Richard Matheson for writing such a scary story! Having been equally impressed with THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE movie, I am determined to see more movies based off his work and also read his novels and stories as well.

Don't know how anyone could think the remake is better. It's just a shot by shot remake. It's only good when it copies the original. It adds nothing new. The actors aren't as good and the reveal at the end is awful compared to the original. Have they ever heard of less is more? It looks like something from Labrynth.

I think Lysette Anthony as the mother in this movie did a better job. There were times in the film where I could really feel the emotions of her character and I couldn't tell she was acting. I honestly believed for a short time that she WAS that character. But Lee Montgomery did a better job in the role of Bobby in Dead of Night. He seemed more menacing and was a lot scarier. Overall, I think both versions of the story are enjoyable though. It is a well written, spooky tale.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

How ironic that you state that people like the original because they "look upon it with feelings of nostalgia resulting from being terrified by it as a kid", THEN you go on to say that the remake is better than the original and that YOU saw the remake as a kid yourself. So, you're claiming the remake is superior to the original because people only like the original due to the fact that they look back with nostalgia at it, YET, that's EXACTLY what you've done with the REMAKE. Don't you see the complete and utter hypocrisy in your post?

Well said, Danimal. This day and age people have an attitude that you can't actually appreciate anything from the past unless it's for reasons of nostalgia because what we have in the present is OBVIOUSLY better. Why can't we be allowed to genuinely enjoy anything from the past? I think it's silly and highly presumptuous. I wasn't even alive in the '70s and hadn't seen the Dead of Night version until about 5 years ago so I can't be nostalgic for that time. Yet I still prefer it because I truly believe it's good.
