So, what triggered the blackout?


It would have been far more interesting as a domino flow-on effect from human the human. The blackout was an unnecessary tool, so was the happy, positive energy trust BS to restore it.

The movie suggested sun spots which makes the blackout's effects on the radio very likely but no explanation was given because there was none needed; the blackout was just a McGuffin to examine society at its most desperate.
