Do you think anything actually happened?

Do you think he went further than just making out with her, or was he telling the truth?

I think they went furthur. I dont know, he sounded like a liar to me, personally.

reply

I feel like they just made-out.

reply

I think he was lying and went further.

reply

Well, he said he didnt, but they did "make out like high school kids" , as he said to his brother.....
ok, knowing women the way I do, the way she was acting when she ran off to NYC to get awqay from her demented/abusive dad, I think they DID screw....I mean, she was old enough, right? (Was it 18 in N.Y. - but 16 in other states?) Whatever.....just my opinion - the way she ran off to the city and dissed Tommy seems that something more than "making out:" occured! haha -

reply

Tommy was an alcoholic loser, but I don't think he lied. He might have wanted to do her, but he thought better of it. Unfortunately that was enough to get his ass kicked.

Ahem, I have to admit Chloe would be hard to resist! But as for Tommy, I think he just made out with her, making the scene where he gets beat up that much more pathetic. In other words, there's a lot of irony in him trying to make it seem that taking advantage of her by just making out with her somehow was better than going all the way. To Tommy there's a difference. I think anyone corrupted by alcoholism thinks they can mitigate certain sins by arguing that they could have done something worse. It also shows how much in denial he is about his problems.

Well, it would be fun to ask Steve Buscemi if it happened! Lol - or if this was based on his real-life experiences, and if HE actually screwed the character, as he did in real life 20 years before! Lol - He really poured out his heart into this movie, maybe that's why I love it so much...

I agree....she DID have that "jilted lover" asect of her character...didnt she?

reply

She did... but the question is, is that because they did the deed and now she's feeling icky about it, or because she was disgusted that he was too much of a coward to step in and take the heat when her dad was going ballistic? Every movie should have a good but ultimately immaterial mystery like this. :)

It's funny, but Buscemi has made 2 different girls feel 'icky' on film - Cloe Svigny in 'Trees Lounge'
and Thora Birch in 'Ghost World' - at least with Thora, she was gone by the time "Seymour" woke up! ;)

Enid DID show her (Sophie Crumb's sketchbook, daughter of legendary cartoonist Robert Crumb and equally=legendary Aline Kominsky=Crumb (my hyphen key is broken sorry)) drawings to Seymour though, and told her how awesome she thought he was. So he can't have icked her out that much...
I actually think Seymour is very much based on the director of Ghost World (and Crumb!) Terry Zwigoff...he's barely in the comic source material of GW.

I don't think it had anything to do with how far they went (I think they only made out, BTW)... She ran off because Tommy was a coward and wouldn't stand up for her, and because she was tired, and very afraid, of her father's violent temper.

reply

Standing up to her stocky father would be suicidal for a shrimp like Tommy. That guy needs to be put down, not have somebody "stand up" to him and get beaten up. Discretion is the better part of valor. Her father belonged in prison for abuse. Assaulting Tommy and trashing a truck based on kissing?! He should have reported Tommy to the authorities if he thought more happened. Instead, he broke the law, committed assault and destroyed someone else's property. He's a piece of sh!t, a punk, a thug, and a bully. Let him get assaulted in prison.

I thought it was obvious from her attitude 'the morning after' that too much had happened...

reply

I think that an important theme of the film was that even though Tommy was an alcoholic he was still compelled to observe the social mores of the community (i.e.; alcoholism and moral depravity are not mutually inclusive).

So, I think he was telling the truth.

I think they did go further. Debbie wouldn't have been that upset if they just kissed. Tommy is a born liar, and his claim that they "just kissed like highschool kids" is for the audience to decide on whether or not Tommy is trying to make a change. I think they did go further, but there's a part of me that wants to believe Tommy.

As Tommy was driving Debbie home she was depressed and guilt-ridden, that right there implied that more than just kissing was going on, and when Tommy denied anything happened really sealed the question...Besides , Tommy was a bit of a perv anyway and wouldn't miss the opportunity to "score". He and Jerry were not that close of friends anymore.

But Tommy was a chicken sh-t not helping Debbie when she called him for support and help with her father...Tommy let her down and came across as weakling, he hung her out to dry when she needed him...A bit of a weasel.

reply

Buscemi is the director, so obviously Tommy is supposed to be a lovable loser. He's weak, but has a heart of gold. Such a character would never "take advantage" of a sweet girl, it's bad enough he kissed her, but he got beaten up for that so it's OK

reply

They definitely did it - which is why she was so quiet with him the next morning (before that, they'd been talking up a storm every time they met) and why they shared an awkward kiss goodbye (on the lips) when she exited the ice cream truck. All of that indicates too much intimacy that is retroactively embarrassing because once you cross a line, you can't go back again.

She was similarly awkward when he felt terrible about what had happened and he caught her leaving town. Her friend tells him how great she is at the guitar and Tommy mumbles that he didn't know that. At this point, she wants to forget everything that happened - her parents, what happened with Tommy, all of it.

It was the last straw, crossing from lovable loser to willful skunk. He knew he was wrong. His future is basically Bill - ever wonder why they wear the same kind of clothes?

They had sex.

reply

If I'd been her I'd have screwed him! Lol. Steve Buscemi has bug eyes but I really fancy him in this! BTW, I think they did have sex.

reply

I think there was more than Tommy led on. Certainly was not a trustworthy character.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

reply

They obviously had sex. I can't believe anyone would even question that. It's plain as day obvious to see, from every expression and exchange between them from that moment after. Only someone who's never had a one night stand or maybe has never had guilty sex wouldn't understand that obvious subtext. LOL
