Begbie and the trans woman

Does anyone else find it odd that someone like Begbie, who generally doesn't even need an excuse to be violent, apparently did not hurt the trans woman he picked up in the club after realizing she was biologically male? I realize that he was shocked, and also that (according to Robert Carlyle) Begbie is supposed to be a closeted homosexual, but it just seems like being the psycho he was, he would have beaten her to a pulp. And I didn't see anything to indicate that he did.

I made this topic, but it got deleted. Yeah, it's weird.

The only thing I can think of is that it knocked him for such an emotional/psychological loop that it didn't even occur to him to get violent. Otherwise it makes no sense in the context of the character.

Or maybe he was so embarrassed by it, that he just wanted to get the hell out of there. But it's a worthy question.

I always thought that he never intentionally hit women. You could argue the gender and vulnerability of that person, but I'm sure Begbie was also confused and disgusted with himself in that moment to do anything else but run away.

See you in hell, candy boys!

reply

Yeah but in the context of the character, someone like Begbie would never even consider the person a female so as far as he's concerned the not hitting women rule wouldn't apply.

reply

I always just took it that he was simply shocked and disgusted. He just wanted to get as far away as he could.

So... if Begbie thought he was choosing a female-born woman to have sex with, how is that it implies that he was a closeted homosexual? I am not saying it is not so, but in the end he doesn't have sex with her. He could have and then denied so. That would have been a closeted homosexual, but that was not the case here.

I don't want to agree or disagree with anybody, I'm just looking for a clarification, if anybody could be bothered to explain. :-) It is said many times that homophobic people are always closeted homosexuals, but I'm not sure it is so.

reply

I agree, I've never understood it either. I would think that if he was actually a closeted homosexual he'd probably just go with it. And yeah, I agree, homophobia is not a sign of latent homosexuality.

Was it even a tranny tho? Looked like a real woman to me. Sexy either way..

Remember that he was only in London because he was trying to stay out of trouble after his botched armed robbery attempt. He probably didn't want to complicate his problems by picking up an assault & battery charge. When he does get into a fight again it's with another fat old man that he could easily beat up in Begby bully fashion.

I guess him and Sick Boy squatting at that London apartment was risky, but nobody knew who they were so almost no chance of getting caught.

reply

I always thought Begbie was secretly gay himself (the actor even claims he played Begbie as a "closeted gay man"..) So maybe he just sympathized with the guy.
