All the characters are there, all the same dynamics.
The group you love, the snobby TV hotshot. The house they're in, the breakfast "made from a secret recipe" - So many similarities, it can't be a coincidence.

You have to look more at Jo's character. She wanted Bill to go on another chase with her, because she still had feelings for him (which is why she kept her wedding ring on, and purposely didn't sign the last page of the divorce papers, and acted like she had never seen it before). He still had feelings for her too, which he admits after attempting to chase the F3-jumping tornado on the hill. Melissa realizes this, and she dumps him. Melissa wasn't into the kind of thing that "ruled" Bill and Jo's lives, so to speak.

It's not a coincidence at all. Any time Hollywood is making a movie that is going to be a blockbuster, other studios will put out a film that is similar. Don't forget "Night of the Twisters", which also came out the same year. Armageddon and Deep Impact are another example. It happens all the time, and usually the secondary films are terrible, like "Tornado!", although Deep Impact wasn't bad.
