'Gillian has no more birthdays.'

How true this line of dialogue was, but it was so sad to hear. I hadn't watched the movie in awhile, but hearing that was like a punch to the gut to me (as it was to David). I thought it was interesting that Paul tried to be on David's side by respecting his grief and defending him to Esther, but then he'd say lines like the one listed above. He seemed unsure of how to handle the situation just as much as everyone else.

Throughout the movie Paul was depicted as a jerk. He had glimmerings of wanting to be more independent but was too complacent and p-whipped (although from the dialogue he didn't seem to be getting much P) to really do anything about it.
