I love this Film

I remember seeing the TV spots for this the year I got married. The ghost angle intrigued me and was similar to a screenplay that I was working on at the time. Finally caught it as a rental on VHS and it became an instant favorite.

I understand why many don't think much of this film - There's not much of anything new here and it does play like a Lifetime original movie but what it lacks in originality it makes up for with heart. The dialogue between David and Esther after Rachel reveals David's secret while intoxicated is absolutely beautiful. "Love is a feeling and if I feel it it exists." The whole concept of a man not wanting to give up the romance he had with his wife even though she is dead is precious.

I didn't like the scenes with Paul hitting on the teenager. They were way out of line especially with his wife sitting next to him during most of them. Her response to her perverted husband was pretty ridiculous too. She just kind of brushed it off like oh well, what can I do. The idea of a 40 something year-old man telling a 16 year-old neighbor, friend of his niece no less, at the family dinner table that he can imagine her succulent naked body is a bit much. What were the writers thinking?

Either way the movie is great for what it is - a small love story about a family coping with the death of a loved one. The score is incredible, the location is incredible (Nantucket Island I believe)and the performances are solid.

Though the town scenes were indeed Nantucket, the beach scenes were filmed in North Carolina at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington. Also I think maybe Southport was used (also outside Wilmington, NC.)
