question about carol(spoilerish i suppose)

Can anybody tell me what happened when carol was having sex with that guy and he dies with her, it's right before they burn the car. She tells marty that she was remembering about all that stuff that had happened with her dad, and that when she came out of it that the dude was laying there having convulsions. But what exactly happened to him? How did he die?
