I just watched it tonight on Kodi and was wondering the exact same thing!

It's been awhile since I've watched the movie so I'm not 100%...but Wiki page for Thinner states Chief Duncan Hopley's curse was "Leper" causing him to become mutated with boils, eventually committing suicide.

But like I said...it's Wiki...so...
