Dance With Me Tonight...

Is a WAY better song than TTYD in my opinion....I'll bet Jimmy would really hate me for that..

"Have you gone berserk?! Can't you see that man is a ni..?"

reply

I also like that Lenny does solo in this one, he has great energy!

reply

The best song in the movie.

I spend my money on dope, sex and cheap thrills.
The rest of it, I waste.

reply

I think so too. TTYD is an excellent song, but I like this one better.

reply

I think so, too! It's my favorite song in the movie and Lenny is my favorite character.

I agree also, though That Thing You Do was played on pop radio as well as being played numerous times in the movie, so we are more likely to have burnt out on it.

reply

The title song does really get played too much in the movie. I couldn't believe when they played yet again. So in the end I was relieved to hear any other tune.

reply

Everyone I know including me agrees that Dance With Me Tonight it's better. It's more electrifying and plain old fun.

reply

Yes I'm glad Lenny had a solo song for himself too. Only thing I don't like about this song is that it's somewhat harder to play on my bass than that thing you do for some reason. Besides that I think the song is absolutely equal in catchiness. Lol

reply

No way is that a better song than TTYD. It's good yes and would have been a good follow up but it's not a better song. TTYD is so ingrained that it's worn out it's welcome a tad but it's still pure joyful magic and very inspiring.

I think Tom Hanks wrote all the songs except the title song.

Dance With Me Tonight seems very close to Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", with a Dave Clark Five flavor added.

The credits, remarkably, tell us who wrote which songs. The soundtrack album would provide additional information, if I could find my copy.

Tom Hanks, by himself, wrote three pieces:
"Lovin' You Lots and Lots" - old-school Four Freshman type thing that plays at the beginning, and is on the soundtrack album, to my recollection.
"It's Not Far" - I'm betting this is the song the folk chicks played at the talent show. Don't remember it on the album.
"La Senora de dos Costas" - Possibly this is what the Legends of Brass played at the talent show. It could be something else entirely in the "incidental music" vein.

He's listed as a co-writer of:
"Mr. Downtown" - heard on the Play-Tone tour.
"Voyage Around the Moon" - surfish instrumental, appears on the soundtrack album credited to the Saturn 5, another fictional band. It's heard over the "the band's starting to take off" montage during the Play-Tone tour.
"Hold My Hand, Hold My Heart" - heard on the Play-Tone tour.
"Will You Marry Me?" - I don't know what this is, off the top of my head.
"Hollywood Showcase Theme" - presumably what we hear at the top of the TV show.

Mike Piccirillo is a co-author of all five. He's a very prolific songwriter/producer/musician, who's been around for decades and has contributed music to scores of movies and TV shows. The first four are also credited to Gary Goetzman, who's Tom Hanks' right-hand-man / movie producer.

"Dance with Me Tonight" was written by Scott Rogness and Rick Elias.

It's a catchy song but it sounds like a B side to me....

reply

It does squash "All My Only Dreams" like a grape, though.
