i first saw "Swallowtail Butterfly" while I was living in Japan in '97. I immediately realized what a masterpiece it was and couldn't wait for it to break out in the US, as I was certain it would. Much to my dismay, it didn't cause the Iwai Shunji explosion in America that I had expected. It's funny how media works like that sometimes. I was even further shocked to find it was totally impossible to aquire a VHS copy of it (no DVDs back then). Anyway, I gave up trying long ago. These days, I could probably get a DVD version off the internet pretty easily. Anyone know a reliable source for this? I haven't really been keeping up on Iwai Shunji's other stuff either. Has he done anything recently worth checking out?

Im trying to remember the first time i saw it... umm shoot... Not as early as you though. I was 12 in 97 so, yeah. But umm it was easily a few years ago. I actually got one of his films queued up on netflix which recently was released on dvd here or will becoming out soon and ill will be signing up for a short period with nicheflix (they carry imports and harder to find films) and abuse their service for a time. So ill be catching up with his work soon. Let you know after that time if you like. I actually saw a film called Bright Future recently, great film. Not to compare it to Swallowtail Butterfly but...

Umm There are plenty of good places for buying imports online the only thing you have to watch out for is where the dvds coming from (Maker, country.) A lot of butchered versions out there. I used to have a lot of links to such things but because of recent harddrive problems ive lost a lot of my information, favorites being one of them. :-\

Im sure you know its not going to be cheap though but youre probably like me. Its worth the price for this film.

www.cdjapan.co.jp i think has a good price on it. I also believe its the full uncut version.

Ha, it still makes me mad that the US release of Brother was butchered.

But umm yeah. So i guess thats all i have to say for now. :)

Thanks for the info. I actually only ever saw the US release of Brother, but I'm not surprised. How did they butcher it?

The trivia on here says it all.

As mentioned in another thread on here, it looks like a limited edition is going to be released, 30 dollars. The link up there says it all.

I might get that myself. :)

Just to make sure, you know about the region coding system and all that BS? Im guessing you do, but just make sure you dont make mistake. :)

You can get a region-free 6 disc-set of Iwai's films on eBay for $20 or so. The films included are: Undo, Picnic, Swallowtail, Love Letter, April Story, and the fantastic All About Lily Chou-Chou. It's certainly the best purchase I've made in a long time.

I got this. While its cheap, there is a good chance that the DVDs won't work since they are all bootleg. My copy of All About Lily Chou-Chou doesn't work at all, and Love Letter and Swallowtail Butterfly are glitchy. My friend, while her All About Lily Chou-Chou works, her Love Letter won't work. If you're looking for something cheap, this is an ok purchase. But if you actually appreciate and enjoy these films, you'd be better off just buying the official releases instead of these subpar bootlegs.

I found some region free DVDs of this movie in Japan. I have a copy for myself and it plays fine. I will be auctioning some on eBay. Just do an eBay search for "Swallowtail Butterfly Iwai Shunji Japanese Film DVD" You can get one for 17 dollars.

I've seen this movie now twice, and I guess it's just one of those movies that get better with each viewing it seems. I loved it the first time I saw it - probably a little over a year ago - and I loved it now. One of my favourite movies, really.

The movie has been shown in Finnish TV now two times... I think I'll maybe have to tape it, next time. ^^;

Wonderful movie. What do you guys think of the ending?

reply

What a hell of a ride. I just watched it and i loved it. However I thought they copped out at the end... There are too many loose ends. I'm gonna have to watch it a second or third time...

I own the Japanese R2 and it was well worth it. I ordered it from CDJapan.
