What was wrong with Eddie Selzer and Leon Schlesinger?

I can't believe it. Here I was, thinking for years that the Oscars were simply a ceremony to honor and award the great motion pictures of the year. It was from a strange source (Looney Tunes DVD commentary for "For Scent-imental Reasons") that I found out that the Academy did not judge the best movie from all those made that year. Even a film that wasn't exceptional could win, because the studio or producer had to enter the "contest". If the best cartoon of the year wasn't entered, it woudln't get the acclaim. The Academy doesn't nominate any cartoons itself, it waits for entries to judge. So what the hell were those asses Leon Schlesinger and especially Edward Selzer thinking? I watched some documentaries and found that Selzer was almost openly against the Oscars, refusing to enter his cartoons on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Disney and MGM would enter a cartoon or two EVERY YEAR. If Warner Bros. had done the same thing, they would have recieved the lion's share of awards, I'd say 60% at least. Who agrees with me?
