Why did people hate this movie?

When I used to have HBO, this movie came on almost every night. And I watched it almost every night. Being a guy, it's hard to admit liking this film without people thinking you're a perv. True, Demi did look pretty hot when she stripped naked in the flick, but I mainly liked the movie because....Well, because it's just a good, well-written comedy. If you're looking for a skin flick, you'd be pretty disappointed. "Showgirls" was also about strippers and had much better eye candy, but am I gonna go as far as calling it a "good" film? Hell no! Burt Reynolds was hilarious. I think this is probably one of his best roles. Ving Rhames was great in it too, with his deadpan delivery. To top it all off, the film is written and directed by Andrew Bergman, who wrote the screenplay for the classic comedy "The In Laws" (the original version with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin). Personally, I hope this movie develops a significant cult following and eventually a Special Edition DVD gets released.

Who knows. I just saw it for the first time fully expecting it to suck based on its notorious reputation as a bad film but was pleasantly surprised that it's actually a pretty good movie. Just by seeing some of the posts on this board it seems like a lot of people simply didn't get that the film is a comedy, and as comedies go it was pretty darn funny.

I've also just watched it for the first time!

I think the movie started out pretty decent, but from around the middle, i could slowly start to see some serious flaws and understood why the movie was derided that much. Unfortunately, it gets even worse, as the ending was one of the worst and most ridiculous i have ever seen. It completely derailed around the middle onward if you ask me.

I still managed to enjoy it some, but i gotta give it a 3/10, because i can't believe somebody actually green-lit this thing with that ending. At some point in the production process, somebody in the decision chain should have murdered the previous link in broad daylight as a statement that this will not stand. But what do i now.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefsī²
