So, Who Was Her Father?

While is is somewhat tangential to the overall message of the film, it is an unanswered question in the storyline. I'm thinking it was probably Jeremy Iron's character, because of the melancholy he exudes, reminescent of her mother's suicide.

Any other clues?

Nope,it was Ian (the artist).Re-watch the last conversation between him and Lucy and you'll understand.

Her father is the sculptor. It's revealed in the scene near the end when he shows her the nearly-finished sculpture. They speak in oblique terms, but it's clear that's what they're talking about; watch it again and pay close attention to that scene.

During the scene in which she reads her mother's poem to Alex, the film cuts back and forth between the sculptor at work and Lucy reading. That and the conversation at the end at which they both acknowledge it makes it pretty definitive in my mind.

budwheat, it really does help if you pay attention when watching a movie!

I must say I was disturbed that Ian was eventually confirmed to be her father. As I was watching the movie, I thought it might be him, but I kept rejecting the idea throughout the movie. I don't know, but it seemed to me Ian was fascinated by her in a somewhat sexual way. Then, when she was posing under the tree Ian took her dress down exposing her breast. Finally, after it was revealed she had bee conceived by rape, I cannot imagine why she would approach her father with a bunch of flowers and a smile on her face. I would hate him if I were her.

"Finally, after it was revealed she had been conceived by rape . . ." Whoa! I missed that entirely! Where in the movie was it revealed that she had been conceived as the result of rape?

reply

I also don't remember any allusions to Lucy's being conceived as a result of rape. I'm not sure why borkolar thought that.

Her mothers last poem is strictly based on Lucys conception, in it she explains how she was I guess seduced by "the artist" and how he took her to an unknown place in the hills and proceeded to forcibly have sex with her, although according to the text she wrote it seems like she didnt put any effort in fighting back but embraced it as something "new and strange and near to love."

Almost like when Lucy is about to have sex with Nicalo and he starts getting a lil rough, she stops because its out of place for her, she realizes their chemistry is a facade. "new and strange and near to love."

"I kept on the green sandals but could not get off that hill. Literally where did you take me that night so black and still. He had an accent and a knife, and somewhere even had a wife. He took my face and tore my hips and planted in there place something new and strange and near to love. I thought I had nothing left but you came later, curved and new. Forgive me I did not have the means for catching when I got poor Lucy."

reply

So was she a virgin when she was raped..she said "place something new and strange" like sex is new..or something..I am bad at analyzing poetry.

reply

Um, Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. Duh.

Son, you can't polish a turd

reply

Right at the beginning Diana says "Ian has been faithful to me for almost 20 years", which I thought meant 20 years ago he was unfaithful with Lucy's Mother.

I don't think she was raped, tearing her hips could refer to intercourse, or perhaps she was a virgin.

reply

So... Your idea of sex includes knives and adultery..... Ok.

She was raped. He had a knife. She was raped.

Accept it, and move on.

You're correct bork, it would be disgusting to imply that Ian was her father after his gross little attitude towards her. I didn't like him at all and don't believe he was her dad, he even rejected some of the things she asked to match him with the description her mom wrote. If it was clearly rape, I think Lucy would have caught that and been repulsed by Ian. Why then would she have been so eager to find her father??
