Something I don't get...

About halfway through this movie, we see Steele try to skip the line in the club, but the bouncer tells him to go to the end of the line. Instead, he walks into the alley, trying to get in the club through the backway. Then, we see a spark in the middle of the screen. Steele bribes one of rankors guards with some cash, slaps his face, then we see a bullet in the guards face and he falls down into the chalk outlining. My question, what was that spark and how did the guard die? I know they are related, but I can't figure it out.
