The Third Miracle, starring Ed Harris and Anne Heche. My personal favourite of all-time. Ed plays a priest who investigates miracles on behalf of the Vatican. His last "pronouncement" caused great damage to a parish and his guilt causes him to doubt his own faith. In this film, he is investigating the claim of another parish about a woman in the congregation who is said to have healing powers. Very profound portrayals, great drama, and in the end the movie doesn't do the usual sell-out that Hollywood does with religious themes.
Also try the Joy Luck Club, based on Amy Tan's brilliant best-seller. Not religious at all, but explores the relationships between four women who came to America from China and their American-born daughters for which they hoped so much, but things worked out differently. Heart-wrenching performances about cultural misunderstandings; bring your Kleenex.
