Why wear they wearing blankets?

Why were the prisoners wearing blankets instead of uniforms?

Hillary 2008

reply

Because the IRA believes itself to be an army, the prisoners did not look on themselves as criminals, but Prisoners of War. They refused to wear the uniform of a common criminal and demanded to wear civilian clothes to "separate" them from the rest of the prison population. The British government would not capitulate on this point, so, as a protest, the IRA wore blankets as their uniform.

reply

they wore blankets because they did not see themselfs as criminals but as polictial prisoners so they made 5 demands

# The right not to wear a prison uniform;
# The right not to do prison work;
# The right of free association with other prisoners, and to organise educational and recreational pursuits;
# The right to one visit, one letter and one parcel per week;
# Full restoration of remission lost through the protest

so they wore either blankets or they went naked until a few protestors were beaten up while emptying the chamber pots the protestors started rubbing all the dirt on the walls and started the blanket and dirty protest

there were no protestors beaten up, this is fiction without evidence.

For those others who do not understand the basis of this issue - it would be like the the Al Qaeda prisoners, murderers and convicted terrorists of 9/11, Madrid, Bali etc..... once caught, then claiming to be soldiers with all the rights of captured British and American soldiers in WW2.

This would have the effect of legitimising in international law their crimes and the deliberate slaughter of innocents and the attacks on democratic processes.

No country would have given them the status the demanded, thankfully we had a Prime Minister at the time, Thatcher who called their bluff and allowed them to commit suicide; she recognised they had made their own decision to die as distinct from their victims who were blown apart just for being in the wrong, building, pub, train.....

reply

actually they were beaten up some of the guards of the maze at that time admitted beating them up.

and they were nothing like AL Qaeda britain had no right being in ireland, they died in hope that one day ireland would be free from the british rule,

as for thatcher she will answer for what she has done they day she dies, and on that day there will be a massive ceilidh in both scotland and ireland and you will hear us no matter where your stay.

how can anyone stand up for what she has done she distroyed most of the poor parts of england, tried to turn scotland into a groose hunting more shut down all of our shipyard and factories and let a MP die. you say she called his bluff and let him die, i call that murder if that was Michael Heseltine who was on a hunger strike she would have caved but no she agreed to there demands then went back on her word which started the strike.

and as for the blown up part only one P.O.W at that time was in jail for bomb crimes the rest were in jail for having firearms and having an I.R.A membership

just saying it mate, doesnt make it so.....even saying it in your dead Irish language does not make it so.....

there is no evidence of systematic violence against the Maze prisoners....

Britain IS Northern Ireland the Northern Irish citizens ARE British, thats another fact you in International Law that you dont like but cant refute....

The MP, Bobby Sands killed himself, fact.

Thatcher policies have led to Britain stopping being the 'Sick man of Europe' in 1979 and led to the greatest economic recovery until New Labour started spunking the cash away. Thatcher will be remembered as one of the greatest PM's .......another fact.

As for the crimes of the prisoners - dont be soft in the head, what do you think their guns were for !??

accept it - your Bobby and his mates died for NOTHING,

reply

no evidence of violence against the maze prisoners... hm i suppose the documentarys where a few of the guard admitted doing it does not count.

british is just a term given to people by the government weither you class yourself as british is a diffrent story, some people in nothern ireland dont class themselfs as british. what international law i follow scots law since am scottish i was born scottish and i will die scottish, if anyone tells me am british i say no am scottish.

bobby sands may have died on the hunger strike but he was allowed to die on the strike by thatcher. the reason why is because if he survived and got out then he would be allowed to take a seat in parliament which scared thatcher because in parliament he could start changed that she would not beable to control.

and she stopped england being the sick man of europe as back then scotland was doing better than england so when she got into power she shut down all the scottish shipyard and factorys so that england could get the work. leaving most scotland to suffer. and she will be remembers as the PM who kept the rich people rich and let most of scotland and ireland and the poor parts of england to suffer.

bobby and his mates died for a free ireland which is now called the republic of ireland so part of their dream came true.

Sands was NOT killed by Thatcher, he committed suicide, and force feeding him would have been condemned by his supporters at the time.

I have no problem with any terrorist following him be they IRA, UVF or Al Qaeda.

Also Thatcher saved Britain from being the sick man of Europe due to a whole raft of reforms, including Union reforms which you will note, Blair did NOT reverse when he came into power, nor did he reopen the steel mills or coal pits.

And the Republic of Ireland already existed when Sands and his mates decided to slim for Ireland, a waste of effort which ignited violence across the province that killed many innocents.

You tall *beep* no part of ireland is in britain, britain is an island, so is ireland, dickhead.

also,IRA werent like AL Qaeda, IRA killed more enemies than civilians, the British didnt.
Thatcher was despised the world over, she was terrible.

And those "criminals" made mince meat of your army and SAS

reply

I think you will find that Northern Ireland is British, that is a fact of International Law, get over it. It is also a fact of democracy, something both the IRA and Al Qaeda have fought against.

As for the SAS, it should be noted that they were not the ones peeing their pants and crying about a 'shoot to kill' policy.....boo hoo......

wrong, my ancestors came from the South - but it is surely racther racist of you to suggest that only people with ancestors going back so long can claim to have validity in any democratic vote ?

The people in NI have consistently voted for the link to Britain, would you deny them that because some can only trace their ancestory in NI back 400years ?

That would be to suggest that black immigrants to Britain from the West Indies in the 50's shouldnt get a vote in British elections ? thats just simple racism.
