SPOILER Doyle's Funeral?

I know it wasn't in the movie, and the DC DVD includes a short post-credits scene of Doyle's band trying to manage without him, but I'm just wondering what Doyle Hargraves' funeral would be like. Maybe the traditional funeral, everybody sitting near the casket as the reverend tries to say a few good words about the departed. Would Vaughan, Linda and Frank attend? Or just as soon forget about him? Then I imagine the guys would start playing (or trying to play) "Amazing Grace" as Doyle is lowered into the ground.

Or maybe he was cremated and the guys tossed him into the river?

Here's how I can envision Doyle's funeral. Frank and Linda are sitting on the front row. The preacher gets up and starts saying some nice things about Doyle. Suddenly a puzzled Frank taps his mother on the shoulder and whispers to her "Momma I think you better check that casket, I don't believe that preacher is talking about Doyle". The band gets into an argument about what song to play and the musical portion of the service is a flop.

Frank was a respectful little kid. Just because his mother's boyfriend was a creep doesn't mean he would respond the same way.

I never realized that such a scene was every filmed. Was it as comical and pathetic as their previous "practice" session?

Pretty much. They were just trying to move on without him. I recommend getting the director's cut DVD. That scene is on there, plus a handful of other cut scenes, including one of Doyle and the gang going to get beer, they come across two cops and it shows how Doyle pretty much does have the police in his pocket. Guess he lets J.D. Shelnut win at cards.

Getting along without being violently thrown out of their so-called buddy's house in his screaming, drunken rage, for no reason at all doesn't sound too difficult.

Not nearly as challenging as finding six people who are truly sorry to see him go -- they'd have to hire movers to round out the six carrying his cardboard casket.

I always wondered about that scene, and why they cut it from the finished film.

Does it show Doyle treating Karl like crap in that scene?

No. Karl doesn't even speak and Doyle doesn't talk to him. I think it was cut because Miramax ordered Billy Bob Thornton to cut at least 20 minutes from the finished film, so he chose scenes that had no baring on the plot. This was one of them.

Neither would Frank, although I'm sure Linda would drag him there.

Be that as it may, I'm betting he was a popular guy. He'd probably have a fair amount of people there.
