Doesn't hold up
I just rewatched this after at least a decade. Full of 90s cliches and holes in the story. Seemed better back then, but not the classic I thought it was.
shareI actually think it is pretty solid. Plus, all those actors they got! It isn't the best movie ever made but honestly, it is still enjoyable. There is an effective suspense holding through the whole second half of the movie and I don't know many films that did it.
Anyways, everyone has a different opinion.
I was able to enjoy it and finish it,but it didn't move me the way it did originally. You got that right about a star studded cast. It was far from a bad movie, just lost some of it's shine over the years.
shareThis seems to be the problem of many movies from the 90s. They don't seem to pass the test of time effectively. I don't know even the movies from the 80s have this "80s wibe" which makes them unique and enjoyable (the 80s were full of memorable cheesy movies).
Even though the movies from the 90s have their own touch, their own style, their own signature, they seem today like if it was kind of a death decade. Of course the 90s have their fair share of masterpieces but mostly it's kind of a weak period for movies during which even the blockbusters weren't generally as impressive and epic as the recent blockbusters (like Marvel or not they sure found a way to charm the audience... And I am myself not a big fan) or the ones before or at the very beginning of the 90s (Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Alien, etc.). A movie like Independance Day for instance is certainly well known but is it so respected?
I'm not a 90s hater, I'm a 90s kid and some of my favorite movies of all times are from the 90s. And it was a quite interesting decade to grow up in. But overall when it comes to cinema or culture, it was somehow of a death period.
I hadn't really thought about how bleak the 90s we're in cinema. I just googled "great 90s movies" and there are a ton of great flicks,but many have a darker tone. Matrix,Silence of the Lambs,seven, fight club,etc.. The 80s make you think of Back to the Future,ET, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, etc. Much lighter and fun. Even Ghostbusters is a pretty goofy take on death and afterlife.
