Jane

When Richard sees Jane with simmerson, he knows her and says she is all grown up. Where did he meet her? It was never explained in the tv show, as she also recognises him.

ok, that would be in Sharpes eagle, where Lt gibbons features, however it does not explain why she also recognised him?

I believe in the books it's stated that he meets Jane while returning her brother's personal effects.

reply

That's right. For a while he's torn between the memory of meeting her and Teresa.

I'm pretty sure Teresa tells him he'll marry Jane (shortly before he and Teresa marry, so I'd guess it would be in Sharpe's Company)

For the purpose of the telemovies the roles of Lt Berry and Lt Gibbons were reversed in Sharpe's Eagle. In the books Gibbons is the one who attacks Sharpe (trying to take the Eagle from him) and is then offed by Harper. Sharpe then does the soldier's thing of looting the body and finds a locket with a picture of Jane which he wears for some time as a talisman.

Also, I can't remember in which book, may have been this one, there is a reference to Jane and Sharpe meeting previously when Sharpe returned on a recruiting mission. This took place between Sharpe's Gold and Sharpe's Battle in the books, so two or three years has passed. The only other thing mentioned about this meeting is that Sharpe lied to her about the manner of her brother's death.

You're right, it doesn't make any sense in terms of the TV series, given that he didn't know her family in Sharpe's Eagle. It's a holdover from the books where they met off-page some time between Sharpe's Gold and Sharpe's Company, and probably after Sharpe's Battle. There's a held over reference to the book of Sharpe's Sword in there as well but that passes you by somewhat.

Yeah, if the last we see of Lft. Gibbons, he's alive and looking for promotion to Captain, we certainly can't have Sharpe and Jane meeting because of his death. The excuse of returning his effects is gone.
