French Surrender at the Fort.

Forgive me if I seem monumentally stupid, but why did the French surrender at the Rocha fort?.

Sharpe points out to them that their superiors have left them there to die and given them bad powder to defend themselves with. A smidgen of bad musket/rifle powder should not have been too difficult an obstacle to overcome as they were, after all, manning General Calvet's entire powder magazine.

Has anyone out there got any valid reason as to why they surrendered, as it seems the only plot point in the entire Sharpe series of films that appears inconsistant.....

....and it's beginning to annoy me.

They were deserters to begin with. Upon finding evidence that their superiors wanted them dead, they would have figured that they wouldn't be missed and that it was therefore a safe time to desert again.

Also... they probably weren't keen on the idea of fighting somebody as bad-ass as Sharpe clearly was.

I suspect the problem is that you have too many paperclips up your nose

And it seems they were not actually TOLD there was gunpowder in the fort, they were just told to hold the fort.

Plus the gunpowder was locked away. If Sharpe's forces attacked, then would have to go searching for the gunpowder, then figure out a way in. Not a very good situation to be in.
