Remake?

Isn't this being remade, shot in Winnipeg somewhere? Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez are starring in it.

Oh god no- that's what that is? how horrible...

reply

ugh... that's gonna be nasty... the reason the Japanese version worked so well was because of the unlikeliness of a typical japanese salaryman taking dance lessons... it dealt in contrast with a lot of social issues and that just made it all the more charming and sweet.

I have no idea how we're supposed to be charmed in the same way by Richard Gere... and Jennifer Lopez should know by now she has no business making romantic comedies.

What I fear is that they will not remake the movie. They will remake Saturday Night Fever, or Dirty Dancing, or a host of other movies where instead of finding a quiet place to be happy an entire life change occurs. A wonderful and powerful contest victory instead of a quiet dance on an empty floor. And a romance when the man should be seeking a little more from his life, not love, just a way to get out and express himself.

reply

yes it is and the storyline is absolutely wonderful.

i've seen all the updates in the local news paper and it looks like it's going to be a beautiful movie.

WHY WHY WHY WHY.... BAD CASTING... NO HOPE FOR HOLLYWOOD OR J-LO

I like this Japanese film. i watched it when i was a little kid.all of my family like this movie, funny and nice movie and nice actors!

HAHAHA

Casting is atrocious. The leading lady in the Japanese version is demure, Jennifer Lopez can't even spell demure, let alone act it. Gere is a decent actor, I can see him decently in the role but JLo is terribly miscast. Then again, she is no actress, she is a "star".

I have been a fan of the Japanese version of this film for many years and own the VHS version of it. I believe that using Jennifer Lopez will do nothing but destroy the whole feeling that this movie is based on. Sure she may be able to dance, but she cannot portray the smoothness and allure that Tamiyo Kusakari brought to the original. I have talked about this choice of actors with other fans of the original, and several agree that Jennifer Love Hewlett would have played the part more in its intended form. (She played Audry Hepburn so well!) Many could see Richard Gere as being able to pull off an accurate portrayal of the role as intended and played by Koji Yakusho. Although Richard Gere wouldn't be their first choice either. And Susan Sarandon??? Hopefully as the wife which I think she will be able to pulloff, but I (we) can't see her in the role of the rude female dancer as played by Reiko Kusamura, Hopefully that isn't the role she is playing.

I will NOT pay to see this movie with this cast in it. Also if Miramax Film Studio's is listening.. I won't even buy this when it is released on DVD unless you also release it with the original Japanese version included, (I've been waiting for 3 years for the original's DVD release). It's a shame that some Miramax studio head thought that by using Jennifer Lopez and an old script, he could turn a buck, when all he's doing is turning out another crappy remake of what once was a beautiful movie!

Update (2015/11/24): Well I did finally break down and purchase both the Japanese version on DVD as soon as it came out as well as the "Westernized" version with Gere/Lopez after I was able to find it at Target in the $5. clearance area, oh.. Several years ago now... I watch both at least every 6 months.

I still maintain that the Gere/Lopez version is not now or ever will be as good as the Japanese version, but is tolerable... barely.. Jennifer Lopez just did nothing to bring the grace and allure to the role that Tamiyo Kusakari brought to the original version, and was just unbelievable and not in the good way.. more of reciting lines than acting. Richard Gere is just acceptable, which I feel wasn't his acting as much as the script and direction. I would go as far as saying that he was too smooth, polished and emotionless in his performance, where Koji Yakusho was able to give the viewer the reasonable amount of aloofness and nervousness needed to pull off his role which required someone nervous about dancing. And all the other actors.. Namely Stanley Tucci (Whom I usually like his acting style) and Lisa Ann Walter did nothing to support the movie and I consider nothing more than "placeholders" in the script. (Sorry Mr. Tucci) and in fact, The way that Lisa Ann Walter played her role was just awkward to just outright weird and for me and almost made me turn it off due to over-acting. Stanley Tucci's acting was too plastic much as one would expect from an old comedy.. Kind of prat-fall-ish, almost Buster Keaton-ish .. if that is an acceptable description. And much like Jennifer Lopez, seemed to be just reciting lines instead of acting. Stanley Tucci's only shining moment was when he grabbed a co-worker and spun her in the office. Again, I must fault the Director for the overall failure of this movie.. Giving the fault 70% direction, 30% poor choice of actors.

I still maintain that it should never have been remade. at least not at the time that it was.. With these actors.. And definitely NOT with this director! Maybe in another 20 years or so, Hollywood can look at a remake again,(Assuming that there is still a "Hollywood" and the whole movie industry hasn't been bought and moved to China) but I still have doubts if it will ever be as good as the first (Japanese) version. If you can tolerate it, bypass the western version and see the Japanese version.. You will need to read subtitles, but I believe it is still preferable to the remake.

The reason why the acress in the Japanese version is "demure", is probably because she was not really an actress at that point. Tamiyo Kusakari, an established ballerina, was just making her first appearance in films. She later recalls she didn't know how to "act" at all during the shooting of this movie. She was told to be more natural than to act anything.

seeing as this movie is now set in the usa...There shouldn't be any reason why the leading men would be ashamed to attend dancing classes. Unlike in Japanese culture, In America people are more openly affectionate so it would just look silly that Richard Gere is now hiding the fact he attends ballroom dancing class...Because no one cares. Unlike how Mr. Sugiyama explains in the beginning how Japanese culture looks at people who dance.

i love Stanley Tucci but Naoto Takenaka performance will hold up better.

I love this film! Cannot imagine Gere and Lopez doing the original any justice.

Maybe we should be posting on the 2004 version thread to educate those people, and warn them away. Of course, Americans will have to get over their fear of subtitles. :(

I love all the above responses to the remake that start with -- AGGHHH!!! NO, no, say it isn't so!!
Hopefully, the new Miramax film will have the decency to say it is BARELY BASED on the lovely Japanese film instead of a "remake".
Good grief! Richard Gere is a grotesque choice as he has always struck me as unintelligent, uninteresting, unromantic and not even nice to look at. He is squint eyed, slippery, slimy and sucks as an actor. Now let me tell you what I REALLY think!! His Buddhist mumbo jumbo is quackery and self serving.
Double yucks for Susan Sarandon, that lizard eyed, two faced liberal, aging peacock who makes every role she takes a "women's" issue. How's about just doing your job, lady and treating your mother with more respect! Just because your mother is a sensible Republican and walked out of Michael Moore's latest stupidity doesn't mean she doesn't have a head on her shoulders.
Ah, the film in question....so sublime, so full of heart and soooo funny. Nothing I have seen recently can even touch the sweetness, the sly humor, the very human emotions that all the characters invoke. It is quietly brillant. You want to stand up and cheer and cry at the same time. Quite a feat for such an unassuming film. AND NO SEX SCENES TO CRINGE AT!!!!!!!! And yet so romantic, so much like the Billy Wilder films of yesterday.
Seen any other good films?

You are sooooo political, and this message board is about film, not the politics or religion of the people instrumental in film. If you could kindly reserve your judgemental opinions to acting and filmmaking merit, not religion or politics, this would be a better web site. Do not drag your ugly hate messages into something we all enjoy. If you cringe at all sex scenes, you might consider therapy.

Being? Been! They're selling props on ebay this was made so long ago. Miramax/Disney has little faith in their own property. The original is finally being released Oct. 12 on DVD, but very quietly. Gad, I've had Shaolin Soccer on R2 for years now and they've only just released it here. I'm surprised they didn't remake it with Carrot Top in the Stephen Chow role!

See the original and you will wonder why anyone would want to remake it. It's not so culturally different that you won't sympathize with the characters. Since there isn't a release date for the remake you can go to www.cinema.com or www.rottentomatoes.com to see the trailer. It looks to be a copy but with more slapstick than the original. One more point: Tamiyo Kusakari (Mai) is a professional ballerina and has a natural elegance, J-Lo is a rump shakin' fly girl who couldn't win a clog contest. That's the difference!

With any remake it's always good to see the source.

The remake was simply a star vehicle for both Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere.It never gave justice to the original film. J.Lo was definitely a miscast.

Come on now, it wasn't that bad of a movie. I'm not a big fan of Susan Sarandon's politics, or of Jennifer Lopez's diva persona, but they did a good job. Richard Gere did a decent job portraying his character as well. Sometimes it helps to just watch a movie for entertainment every now and then.

I saw the remake first and enjoyed it. The idea that we need to make an effort to keep our marriages alive is more important to me than some of the other reasons people commented on. I think that Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon played that beautifully and the scene with Richard Gere appearing on the escalator in a tux with a single rose and asking Susan Sarandon to dance is one of the most romantic things I've ever seen. Both movies had much to recommend them and I'm sorry that Miramax saw fit to edit out some of the background from the original movie. It might have changed my view if I had seen more of the background but I don't think I would have liked the remake less.

I hate it when Japan makes a charming wonderful film and Americans have to f@ck it up with f@cking J-Lo UGH!

Here's a slinky, go play.

reply

Well, if the Americans got a Japanese actress, the audience probably wouldn't be able to understand her due to her speaking in Japanese or speaking English with a heavy Japanese accent!

"check the imdb cast list before asking who portrayed who in movies please"

That's incredibly racist.

I saw the american version first and the japanese one just today. I thouht the ameriacan version was great as is the japanese one. Both Richard Gere and the Japanese actor were good...equally so. I thouht Jennifer Lopez was very good...a shade better than the asian one.

It's interesting reading the reactions of fans of the Japanese version when the American version was in the works.

I saw the Japanese version first, and absolutely loved it. Others are right about the story working better in the first one, because of the cultural bias against dancing and dancers. That was an integral part of the story and gave it a great deal of its charm and pathos.

But I also liked the American version. I thought Gere and Lopez did admirable jobs, and I loved the tango scene. I like the Japanese version best, but the American was good too. Just very different.
