Did Roxanne already know that Monica couldn't have kids? I wonder about this because when Cynthia calls Monica selfish for not giving Maurice any kids (in that so powerful scene at the barbecue), Roxanne says 'MUM' like she's trying to warn Cynthia of something ie to shut up becuase she doesn't know the truth of the situation. She also seems to have a look in her eyes like she's trying to tell her mum to shut up NOW. I know that Maurice reassures Monica in an earlier scene that he hasn't told Roxanne about their problems, but perhaps he lied so that she wouldn't get upset. Of course, maybe Roxanne only suspected what the truth was as well.

Odd you should pick up on that because the same thing occurred to me the other night when I was watching it. I think it's quite possible because there is a strong uncle/niece bond between Maurice and Roxanne throughout the film. She's obviously the apple of his eye, which is to be expected because he took on the role of father when she was a child plus he had no children of his own to lavish attention on. So I think there's every chance Maurice confided in Roxanne despite his reassurances to Monica. Just more secrets and lies.

Good question.
Here's my thoughts:

I think Roxanne's reaction is mostly due to her being embarressed by her mothers behavior. I don't think she knew her aunt was sterile, but it is probable she had suspissions about it. And in any case Roxanne had sense enough to understand the indecensy of the comment, no matter what she knew or not.

It was clear Monica had not spent a lot of time with Roxanne -- when she greets her at the door she says 'long time no see' -- so I doubt very much she got into any discussions of her gynecological condition.

I just think Roxanne was already embarassed and angry by Cynthia's behavior so she was saying 'shut up' more in general than specifically over what Cynthia said about Roxanne having children.

I think she might have had an unconfirmed suspicion about it but never asked anyone directly.

@jaystarstar The OP was wondering if Maurice had told Roxanne about Monica's condition - how often Monica and Roxanne discuss anything is irrelevant.
