Is it really big of a deal?? (finding out about step sister)

I love Mike Leigh's films. One of the reasons is that his films are very realistic. Conversations and acting look very natural and rational. I just felt kind of awkward towards the end of this movie though.

Is founding out about a step sister such a big deal that everyone who knew should feel really terrible for not telling her the truth earlier?

It was her mother's shameful secrets and of course she'd be shocked, but if I were her, I'd be glad for having a new sister. Roxanne's reaction felt bit over dramatic.

Yeah, it's a pretty big deal.

But Cynthia's continual over-the-top drama-queening probably sent Roxanne over the top.

Imagine you're 21 years old and you learn that your mother and your uncle (all the family you have in the world) have been keeping a secret all your life. Suddenly you find out that you have a half-sister, and she has a different-coloured skin from you.

Your relationship with your mother's already strained and you don't often see your uncle. You're already mad at the world and you hate your job. At the birthday party that's supposed to be all about you, you learn that you're not an only child when your mother blabs it. Then your mum gets weepy in her drink and your birthday party really goes into the bin.

No, nothing to be upset about there. [/sarcasm]

It's not really that big of a deal. Except that Cynthia and Roxanne already seem to be unglued. When Roxanne finds out about Hortense and that Maurice and Monica knew all along, her reaction isn't so surprising. Both she and Cynthia are hotheads who can't control their emotions.

Half-sister, not stepsister. Half-sibling = you have one parent in common. Stepsiblings = no biological relation. Your parent remarried someone who has children of his/her own; they become your stepsiblings.
