Actually his name is spellt Maurice* and his wife is annoying too she spends the whole movie whinging about her period pains. If you haven't seen this movie already, dont watch it. Annoying, Boring and a COMPLETE Waste of time.

The characters have London accents you nitwit. London is in the South not the North. I'm sorry if a film about real people offends you, most people do not actually look like Pamela Anderson or Brad Pitt and still manage to reproduce and live their lives.

Just because someone hated this movie doesn't make someone stupid. I hated this movie also and I am not "dumb" or "shallow". Not everyone has the same taste as you. I think this movie is vastly overrated and can cure imsomnia. But, according to you, since I hated this movie, I guess I am unintelligent and have no taste.

i didnt like this movie, but then i was made to watch it over and over by my film studies teacher. but the acting was outstanding, the film was well made, just wasnt my cup of tea, i wouldnt say it was a bad movie.

If you wake up at a different time in a different place,could you wake up as a different person?

it's an outstanding film. a great, raw presentation about the dishonesty, emotional anguish, and
confusion of social interaction and relationships.

someone who says they don't like it is probably too immature to appreciate it.

i bet the poster who says they hate it is 19, or about that maturity level.

i didnt like this film but i dont think that makes me immature, i can appreciate the messages and values the film gives. maybe if i had seen the film of my own choice i would feel different, it just annoyed me after a watching parts over and over again and having to pick it apart for school work. it was a couple of years since i last saw it, maybe i say i dont like it because of the way i remember it. prehaps i should watch it again without my teacher making comments and going back over parts multipul times.

I get the feeling Willy has offended people much more with his negative attitude (using words like "fat" and "podgy" and making fun of Claire Rushbrook's face) than merely with the fact that he hated this movie. But some of the comments Willy has inspired have been just as idiotic, like assuming that someone is stupid or immature if they don't like this film. You might want to restrict your insults to the person you are offended by, rather than expand them to include a large group of people, many of which have done nothing wrong. Just my opinion. Oh, and I think this movie sucks ass.

i like thespookykids had to watch this for film studies, i have the exam coming up in 1 1/2hrs and am dreading it, its very slow moving, i guess leigh reckons if individual ppl create the characters they will turn out better, but to be honest i'm glad i'll never have to watch it again after today.

recently saw it.. today.. and it was one worthless piece of.. i don't know... I've seen far better movies... sure, the acting was good... but.. that doesn't make a movie... It took a lot of time, and nothing really happened... or, a lot of nothing happened...

I love that even on IMDB there are rare islands of sanity.

What i mean is this: I happened to really love this film. I do, however, think it takes a good brain in your head to appreciate a film, state what you apreciate about it, then just say it doesn't really grab you.

I think saying someone is immature because they don't like a film is actually quite childish in itself.

There are plenty of movies I don't like. This isn't one of them. But I think anyone who comes out and states "I hate this film" should be prepared to state why, and claiming they don't like the accents is not acceptable.

As for the initial post being a joke, why? Why would someone post a thread like that for a joke. By definition a joke is meant to be funny to more than just the person who wrote it.

Of course Cynthia is irritating. She's supposed to be. And yet we end up sympathising with her. And Roxanne is a sour faced bitch, but at least we learn why. We make the journey through the film along with the characters and at the end we see each of them differently than we did in the beginning. That is good film making.

I know this is years later, but I also strongly disliked this film. I went to the theatre to see this with my, then, husband and wow was it a lot of whining, annoying people all having a hissy-fit. That's really all it seemed liked to me at the time. I mean I could be wrong.

So no worries Capracorn, I'm bright and I also hated it. It was just so... I can't find a proper word that won't be blocked by censors. LOL

Secrets and Lies
What a movie. What performances!!!!!!!
This movie made me a Tim Spall fan.
I have never set foot in England but I do have a basic understanding of the social mores and social sratafication and accompanying decorum.
This movie showed me normal people in a dysfunctional setting trying to get by
when Hortense appears.
I cannot recall so compelling and visceral a drama that made me feel as if these were real people who could be living near me. (if I lived in England that is)
The guy who thinks it is the worst film he has seen is just full of it
Brilliant film that will stand the test of time.

This movie made me a Timothy Spall fan too. The scene where he is photographing the accident victim in his studio is absolutely gripping. He is so low key and professional while she is so keyed up she's flinching. Flash goes the camera again and again, ratcheting up the tension and acting as a kind of disruptive punctuation to their dialogue. Everyone else is great too, Brenda Blethyn, the loutish daughter at home, the long lost daughter and so on. See this movie it's worth it. If you don't like it wait ten years and try again.

Willywonka and co. are keeping great movies like Secrets and Lies, The Straigth Story,and other great indie flicks from getting wider distribution among national movie theaters. People like Willy prefer formulaic action movies, unfunny comedies, money motivated sequels and other, short attention span, drival that plagues most movie houses across our nation.When these people grow up they will realise that their lives are missing something and they are unable to express their spirit; their emotions; their concept of the world around them...because they haven't sit down and paid proper attention to fine acting ,directing, story telling, that the indie flick has to offer.Secrets and Lies is a masterpiece, for the simple reason that there are no comparisons to it. Its sense of realism, with its improviesd acting and tense story line strike deep into your heart and stimulate all the emotions.This movie is a landmark of the 1990's movie making and will be a template for modern movie making for decades to come. I hope in the future the movies that express real human emotions and spirit make the top ten blockbusters and not the shallow, weak efforts that populate pop culture today.

you all sound so stupid saying that secrets and lies is a brilliant realistic film and that u hope that the future of film making heads in this direction. why would anyone want that? your all too far up your own arses. it isnt cool to like films because the director tries to be arty and capture a certain realism, cus mike leigh doesnt even do that in this long, drawn out, melodramatic and comic affair.

are you really saying that Brenda blethyn is a realistic actress? dont think so.
