movies like htis are not good for kids to watch

movies like this put thoughts into kids heads about becoming the character...even though the character gets so sick kids will try it and become just like her....trapped in a disorser that is hard to escape....i beg parents to not let their kids watch these type of movies!

it's A GOOD MOVIE! for them to watch.
because it tells them to always eat, and play hard.

It's a good movie for kids to watch, but should involve some parental involvement also. The parent needs to discuss what is going on, and the issues involved with the kid. I know, it's asking a lot of parents these days.

Yes, the movie can certainly start a dialogue between a parent and child about the danger and potential life-threatening and damaging behavior of starving oneself and/or purging through forced vomiting, laxatives/diarrheal aid or water pills. yes that is probley the best was for if some one is worried about how there child may take the film or how it mite effect them

it is and isnt for some children who can be influenced very easly or has already started to worry probley best not but it could help them understand if like they knmow some one who has an eating disorder or is tryin to over come it it could help with makeing them see just how bad they can be but it can be good to let them watch but bad in other it mainly depends what kinda of child they are and how they feel about them selfs and how influenced they get

I think this is a very good movie for kids to watch. It's informative, as well as entertaining. It shows the reality of eating disorders- how they control your life, how your relationships suffer, how they affect your health... My mom forced me to watch this movie when I was about twelve. I didn't have a full-blown eating disorder, but my teachers and other students were concerned that I wouldn't eat during lunch period. My mom had a conference with my teacher, and she forced me to watch the movie, thinking it would convince me not to starve myself. I wasn't anorexic, but I did/do have issues with my body and with food in general. This movie could have been my life. I really related to the main characters- particularly Lexi- and Lynda Carter's character could have been based on my mom! This debate is similar to that of the one about young people watching Requiem for a Dream: people either worry the movie will give kids ideas, or it will scar them for life somehow. Requiem is a terrific example of why NOT to do drugs, just as this movie is part of a great anti-eating disorder campaign.

Movies like this definately sucked me in and taught me wut to do as far as how to go about I guess developing an eating disorder. I would learn tricks and tips from these movies.

That kind of makes me angry, actually. Sure, some kids might be influenced negatively, but give people a little credit. Most kids can see that this movie is saying eating disorders = bad. Kids, especially the teenagers who might be affected by this, aren't just mindless clay figurines.

I know this is an old argument, but this thread reminds me of the ones where people discuss whether movies are responsible for the violence in society. I'm a firm believer that they aren't, just as I believe that movies about eating disorders do not "teach kids how to be anorexic". These movies aren't promoting eating disorders; they're trying to educate people about them. Watching this movie didn't inspire me to starve myself- it made me want to get in shape the healthy way. I don't want to lose my hair, or cough up blood, or die from organ failure. Nothing in this movie romanticizes the illness. It's reality, and it isn't pretty.

So yeah, there are girls that will use these movies for tips instead of learning from them, and there's not much we can do about that. I'm not saying culture doesn't influence people, but if you're a grounded, sensible person, they shouldn't make you do something you would never do otherwise.

If you decide to "become" anorexic after seeing this movie, then you were already anorexic before you watched it. Just as people who commit murder don't do it as a result of watching a violent movie- they weren't playing with a full deck to begin with.

I heard that, Curtis!

I couldn't disagree more with the OP. I watched this movie when I was around 11/12 for the first time and it helped me realize the dangers and problems of the characters' actions! Many children are wiser than one would think- they would hopefully be able to tell that there are consequences to go along with such actions. I would have been a great fool to think it was good to follow their example after all the horrible things that happened! This movie had good lessons to teach. I would watch with my children (at a certain age, of course, of maturity) and try to show them the problems with eating disorders and what they could learn from the film.
