Doesn't hold up

This movie seemed clever back in 96 because the 90s had been such a dry period for horror. Watching it now, the constant patting itself on the back and winking at the audience is just distracting. It has none of the charm or spirit of the movies it claims to be commenting on and, when you get right down to it, all the conclusions it makes about the slasher movies are actually wrong. Really painful movie to watch in 2020. Smug, "meta" nonsense.

Nothing holds up...The Beatles, Abraham Lincoln or the even that first Alien movie.

The other day I read a popular user boasting how much he watches movies on his phone instead of a television screen.

So he's watching a 7 inch screen instead of 50 inch?

So trendy...

reply

The Beatles hold up just fine. Great art always holds up. This movie, however, is not great art. It's a smug, smarmy, backhanded compliment to much better movies made during a much better era for horror.

reply

WHO IS BETTER?...THE BEATLES OR BEETHOVEN?...DOES THAT MEAN THE LESSER IS GARBAGE?...NOPE....SCREAM PALES IN COMPARISON TO ITS INSPIRATIONS...TRUE...HOWEVER,THAT DOES NOT TAKE POINTS AWAY FROM WHAT IS AN WELL DONE HORROR FILM.

reply

Thank you speaking louder. I am getting older!

reply

He was bragging about that? I only watch movies on my phone because I'm poor....

reply

You are as wrong as the US election polls.

reply

Nope.

reply

Yep.

reply

Nope.

reply

Your vocabulary is pretty limited, huh?

reply

Nope.

reply

I'm glad you agree with me.

reply

Not sure if you're up to date, but the US election polls are looking pretty accurate right now.

reply

Oh, so it's a LANDSLIDE???

reply

No, just a win. Most pundits I follow didn't say it was going to be a landslide, just a win.

reply

They said a blue wave and certainly not that 7 states would still be unable to declare a winner.

reply

Yeah, no blue wave, but I'm content with winning the presidency.

reply

Woah, freaking hell, you're Kamala Harris???

reply

Yes, you're figured me out.

reply

You're so lucky to be the running mate of a guy who might not even make till January 20!😉

reply

Thanks! I figure I'll be president sometime in the next four years! Can you imagine... the first female, black president!

reply

Absolutely!

reply

That's great. I love cars!

reply

You'll be giving them away, though...to all of us!🚗

reply

But that means I get one too, right?

reply

Uhuh. Oprah, didn't point to herself, now did she?!

reply

No car. :(

reply

No car or no presidency. It's up to you!🤷‍♀️

reply

Well I watched it a few months back and I was thoroughly entertained. I guess there's no accounting for taste.

reply

Your comment certainly demonstrates that!

reply

I'm not sure how anyone could watch Scream & think to themselves, "this movie doesn't hold up". That's just plain ridiculous logic. There are some movies that don't age well, but Scream definitely isn't one of them.

reply

100%. I was watching Happy Death Day (2017) recently and the vibe reminded me so much of Scream. It's still relevant and influencing modern filmmakers.

reply

I guess I'm not impressed by postmodernism. Makes me think of "hipsters" in a coffee house giggling over something they find clever that people who actually work for a living would find banal at best.

reply

While there are moments and scenes in reference to the slasher genre here and there in the film I don't see exactly how it's "constantly patting itself on the back and winking at the audience". Actually what makes Scream special is how it is able to balance the satire and straight up horror elements of the genre so well, it works as a satire of the genre but works just as well a very well made slasher film.
