90s action movies were almost all the same: Die Hard clones.

One tough guy trapped among a gang of terrorists who have taken over a plane, a prison, a skyscraper, etc. etc. I can't really tell the difference between them. Saw most of them at the theaters in the 90s and now they are just a big blurry montage of guys running from explosions in slow motion.

reply

now you mention it . yeah
but you've also got buddy-cop type action movies
in fact isnt that action movies generally, regardless of decade?

reply

Isn't diehard also a buddy cop movie, with the black cop outside as partner?

reply

Interesting interpretation.

reply

Yeah it was the trend at the time but is there really a reason to complain? The Rock was one of the best action movies of the decade.

reply

I'd say one tough guy taking on everyone got its origins in the "First Blood" Rambo movies. They spawned off Commando, Preditor and eventually Die Hard.

reply

Oh come on you surely you must've liked some of these
The Last Boyscout
Under Siege
The Fugitive
Speed
Point Break
True Romance
Goldeneye
Face/Off
Con Air
Blade
Bad Boys
Cliffhanger
Air Force One

reply

A couple of those like True Romance and Goldeneye do not fit the cliche of "One man in a skyscraper/plane/prison etc. held by terrorists". I don't think they had guys running in slo-mo away from explosions, either.

reply

Yeah, many of those are not Die Hard clones. It sounds like he just tried to come up with every action movie he could think of.

However, back to your point in the OP, all Die Hard clones are not forgettable or copies of all the others.

The Rock, for instance, is a much better and more enjoyable movie than Under Siege.

reply

UNDER SIEGE IS A FUN LITTLE FLICK IN ITS OWN RIGHT.

reply

It's okay. It's certainly much better than anything Steven Seagal has done in the last 20 years and it's one of the more memorable action movies of the early 90s.

reply

IM A FAN AND I CANT DEFEND HIS LAST 10 YEARS OF WORK AT ALL...NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER.

reply

I'll occasionally watch his new stuff for the lulz. I think the last thing I watched was Code of Honor. It was terrible.

He clearly doesn't give a fuck anymore. He's overweight and can barely move, clearly relies on stunt doubles for any wide shots, and often only appears on screen for maybe 20 minutes in the whole movie.

You can contrast that with Van Damme who is still in very good shape and seems to still be genuinely trying when he makes a movie.

reply

“Many of those are not Die Hard clones”- yeah that’s the point.

reply

Exactly. This thread was nonsense.

reply

NAME EVERY "ONE MAN" 90S ACTION FLICK YOU CAN THINK OF....I BET THE REST OF US CAN NAME 10 NON "ONE MAN" 90S ACTION FLICKS FOR EVERY ONE YOU COME UP WITH....THERE WAS A SMALL TREND OF THAT PREMISE,BUT OVERALL 90S ACTION MOVIES WERE NOT ALMOST ALL THE SAME.

reply

Of course but the point being that even if you didn’t like the Die Hard clones there were still plenty of quality action movies that came out in the 90s.

reply

Well now we have a big CGI blur of endless superhero movies

reply

Yeah. That's worse.

reply

But even without the superheroes, we can never really trust a new action movie knowing very well how far that CGI has advanced.
