Underrated Movie

Really a very good movie. Everything. All characters and Halle was perfect..in their face to those who say her acting sucks!! I enjoyed every second of this film.

i'm a big fan of halle, but haven't seen this movie. do you think i should watch it?

reply

Yeah. But really, I cannot say if you'd like it - but it's great IMO.

reply

It's a great movie. However, Halle is a bit cringeworthy in some parts with her typical "deer in the headlights" look and bad acting. It's hard to empathize with her character because she shows almost no emotion or depth and her (unintentionally) funny badly delivered lines. I would watch it for the suspense and the great plot but I wouldn't say its great and most of that is due to Berry's performance.

reply

Whatever! She isn't as bad as what I've seen this year, really. The entire "deer in the headlights look" is best part of the scheme in the plot. Don't you get it???? Just watch it again and you'll see what I mean. Really, if you watch it again, you'll catch the little things through out the film which is what makes this movie quite entertaining. I thought that she performed very well. She cannot help it if she is gorgeous and talented. SOrry...

Here, here! How true! I AGREE with YOU. See, what did I mention to you in my last post CaribbeanFlava? Just read between the lines (For the obvious reasons. I mentioned to you previously that if SHARON STONE were the MAIN character in this film, I assure you that the negative and whiny comments would certainly cease to exist(particularly the advarsarial comments made about Halle) and you will get my drift. IMO, it's great and I 100% agree with you and only the few others!!! I am sorry that I am so passionate about films and actors, it is only because I was a part of this industry and will re-enter this industry again and it really irks me when some of the critics are so unfairly scathing about their commentary based on social issues which are currently at unrest these days.

I personally am very familiar of how much work that it takes to build and produce a film. It is one of the toughest professions (aside the medical field and other very respectable professions). Film making is very demanding and that is an understatement. Furthermore, filmmaking and the work that goes into it truly isn't as glamorous nor as simple as some may imagine. I take films and viewing them very seriously both as an art form and from a business perspective and it is highly insulting when I read some of the viewers casually tossed about comments for the reasons other than fairness to the film itself without sneaking in the typical comments which some of us are all too familiar in recognizing.

Then again, there ARE some very bad films out there which are worth mentioning as to "how NOT" to make a film (BUT virtually EVERYONE who watched "SAW" thought that this film was better than "Gone With The Wind" (which I appreciated for its story-telling quality and casting, however, certainly NOT for the insecure antics and portrayal depicted about African-Americans at that time. It just wasn't necessary. I mean wasn't it degrading enough that the African-American actress was a servant, let alone to write dialogue as if the actress were a complete idiot?) You should have read the RAVE reviews about "SAW"(and one reviewer DID say such a thing about it being better that GWTW).

But of course, to each his own what ever...free to be you and me...so on and so forth..... For instance; in the film "SAW", I mention this film as a comparison as far as entertainment value and quality content. I am sure that everyone on that set worked very hard and the appeal for this film is not the same as the appeal that I have for "The Rich Man's Wife". At least TRMW has a realistic plot and is probable as to what people will go through for the greed of money. Not only that, but the film also suggests that relationships are more complex than at first glance.

Don't get me wrong, I somewhat respect only SOME of the commentary written in fairness and for the outstanding observations(on the IMDB board in general) and without the mean-spirited digs particularly in certain films in which we are NOT (as women and other-wise)are portrayed stereotypically.

Now, if Halle were portrayed as she was in the film "Swordfish" or in "Losing Isaiah"...the critics would have just LOVED the excellent "acting" in the film (which Halle WAS indeed excellent in "Losing Isaiah"). However, I'd like to watch her in roles where she is not called to portray stereotypical behavior because she has so much more to offer than that and AT LEAST, the director (Jones) recognized that.

Observe the patterns in the other film commentaries featuring select films where stereotypes are wildly portrayed and highly accepted as "accurate". I mean (in sarcasm of course) how dare Halle Berry play a rich female and get away with murder???

It's the sign of the times my friend.

Dear caughtintheundertow,

Absolutely...Halle is awesome in this role and this film is why I began admiring her as an actress. I wish she were in more intelligent and exciting thrillers like this and she is so very beautiful and young in this one. Like the others were saying, this film is underrated and the direction and writing to me is very creative and well worth the time. So, please, catch this one on cable if you are able to. It is very good. To me any way. I think that you will like it as a Halle Berry fan. Watch it and tell us what you think.

P.S. I LOVE reading positive and insightful commentary. Too many of the commentary on many other films on the IMDB board are just plain mean and belong on those sites that they warn children not to visit.

I am promoting positive and fair commentary. Intelligent critiques are the best to read...

Looking forward to reading your commentary.

A fellow film lover!!!

I second the motion with you, CaribbeanFlava. Halle was excellent in this film and I would say more about the SAME BORING actresses (which we are told that are so awesome BUT are totally NOT) in many of the OTHER same boring films who SUCK a heck of a lot more...some of these comments are for the obvious reasons and unfortunately it seems as if we will truly never escape those reasons.

But at least there are some very nice comments on this board about this actress and the film (with exception to that person on the main page who can find nothing but negative things to say. Some folks are just genetically mean-spirited and could not enjoy a film unless the "N" word were featured and THEN this film would be outstanding. However, again, for the obvious reasons which we know what they are). Put it to you this way, if Tarrantino had directed it, it would be the film of the year. Again, for the obvious reasons.

I mean really, if you (like the critic on the main page) dislike something so badly, why would that person write a complete thesis on how bad the acting and the premise of the film was...? I call these folks "Film Neurotica Xenophobes" ;because this particular group of amateur critics despise any film for which they will locate any particle of error...... (again, with certain obvious casting issues for some...put it this way...if Sharon Stone were the lead actress in THIS particular film, only then, would they say she was fantastically wonderful in this film and that the film was an absolute masterpiece) ........AND go on and on of how bad the film was.

I, too, enjoyed every single second. Not a guilty pleasure at all compared to the unfathomable garbage that IS coming out as of late.

Triple thumbs up to the film, to Halle, and to a very creative and thoughtful director (Amy Holden Jones)!!!

And THAT's ENTERTAINMENT folks....

boobie1822:

Those are really strange complaints about Gone with the Wind. The key phrase there should be "at that time"; the book (and thus, the movie) was set in the South during slavery and the Civil War. Mammy was a slave, and her lines were written in accordance with the fact that most slaves were not educated. In other words, the portrayal had absolutely nothing to do with the filmmakers' "insecure antics."

BTW, comparing Gone with the Wind to Saw is like comparing apples to oranges. Okay, they're both movies ... and that's about all they have in common. Unless we're talking about how the characterization of a black detective in the 21st century differs from that of a black slave during the Civil War, in which case ... yeah, that "apples and oranges" analogy stands.

You seem to be claiming that the people who didn't like this movie are all racists who can't stand the idea of having a rich black lead (unless, of course, the n-word is featured). That seems awfully narrow-minded and judgmental for someone who's criticizing others for those same faults.

Halle Berry is an A-list movie star. Obviously the vast majority of people like her ... are we also required to think that every single one of her movies and performances is Oscar-worthy? Nicole Kidman's been my favorite actress for years, but I can still say that Bewitched kinda sucked.

I hate Sharon Stone.
