Help (SPOILER!)

Okay, the ending completely baffled me! So, did Halle Berry hire that crazy guy to to kill her husband and then kill him to silence him? What really happened?

Dear Missvalentine;

That is EXACTLY what happened. And you know what? I thought that it was a very entertaining movie. When I first viewed it overseas, I scratched my head questioning the very same thing. Yes. It is pretty clever too because there are little things in the film that the audience will not catch unless you watch it again. Take for example, the guy she murdered. When they first met, think about the way she looks at him in the bar and then think of the place where they meet. Now, if she were soooo innocent, what would she be doing in a place like that, especially a woman of her wealth. And then, think about the beginning when SHE is the one to SUGGEST the trip to go away with her husband.

Think of this as well, the entire movie keeps you guessing whether she has known this guy from the start, but it was the guy who she was cheating with whom she REALLY set up. The film eludes to the idea that she and her little friend really hate men from the start. That is why when they drive away at the end, she calls them, " Suckers".

I think that perhaps this film did not get it's due because of some of the other blockbusters that came out that year and they basically compared this one to many of the others.This film is underrated and it is one of the few where Halle is actually acting in a role other than playing a hoochie mama of some sort. She is so much more of an actress than that and I believe that she should (or her agent) ought to be more discriminating in the roles in which she selects. Halle is gorgeous in this film, very talented and is often misused in many of the films she appears in.

This particular director (Amy Holden Jones) apparently held a lot of respect for Halle, but then again, this film was made in the late 1990s and it would be one the last of its kind for African-American actresses to be respected in reasonably decent major motion picture roles..(sigh) my friend...Those were the days......

Hi, I have to respectively disagree with your premise on this film.

I saw the film twice and this is my angle: I think she really loved her husband but he was an workaholic and closing in on an alcoholic. She saved him from the latter but he still had affairs and in spite of that loved his wife at the same time. Her relationship turned into a love hate emotion with Halle. Her husband emotionally abused her by not being there and making work more important. Remember his birthday, he seemed to turn the corner and tried to be a better husband. I think the random meeting with Cole when her jeep died was just that. Now, he was hired by her lover to kill her husband but I believe Halle was not involved. OK, I know what your thinking- How about the ending? Well, I think her friend just got together with Halle and wanted to make things right by sticking up for her. I'm sure Halle promised her a little cherry(she would be worth millions in about a year) for her good deed(remember she was in need for money now that her ex was murdered.) I really believe Halle was not a gold digger since she signed a pre-nup and was surprised her husband didn't leave a will and in 7 years of marriage didn't bother to put anything in her name..........only reason she wanted the money was because Cole was black mailing her for $30,000 and she didn't have anything but her jewelry.

Well, that's my take anyway!

Gosh Dave, I sure hope you're right. That other woman was an annoying ninny: saying the detectives were suckers? Why would she say that, though, if Halle was innocent? Unless she meant they were foolish for blaming Halle. But then, people usually call others suckers because they pulled one over them.

This is soooooooooo cool! (Discussing a film we saw years ago!)

This is why I love these movie boards on the internet. Everyone has an opinion and whether we disagree on the plots, how we liked the film or disliked, or general disturbing events in the movie.................it's just fun to talk about!

Finally, someone else who realizes what these forums are *supposed* to be about, instead of the majority of trolls who have no clue. I was excited when IMDB added forums; I, too, thought that I could run into other people like you and discuss movies I hadn't seen in years (but always wondered about, or was trying to understand, etc). Sometimes, someone else can really shed light on a movie for you, just by bringing their point of view! Unfortunately, I've mostly found trolls, and people who are just waiting to insult you if your views differ from theirs. Just had to comment on this, because I find your post so refreshing, and I wish there were more people like you out there on the IMDB forums!
