Why did Karen abandon her car?

Towards the end, Karen abandoned her car, which was not damaged in any way, and took off with the Brian (the scientist) to deal with the situation. What's up with that? Not only did she abandon her car, but she left it parked with the rear end sticking out in the road. What's up with that?
