reply

I believe he was called The Goat because of how the end of his last name sounds, at least that's what I remember from the movie.

"Life does not stop and start at your convenience you miserable piece of $hit"

reply

cant remember if he could dunk 15 feet or easily put a dollar at 15 feet. i think it was around there.

reply

Dr J and Kareem have said Earl could take 4 quarters off the top of the backboard.

Top of the backboard is 12 feet.

reply

15. LOL, his vert was 52' I believe.

Jordan 44

Dominique Wilkins 48

Clyde Drexler 42

Julius Erving 41

reply

Iverson 44

Streetballa' the Bakers' Dozen=56 inches.

6'3" white boy from Colorado...you'd better recognize!

reply

Kareem said that he was only one of 4 (I think it was 4...or some other small number) of people who could snag money from the top of a backboard.

I also recall him being able to replace it with something else. So he would have to get both hands up there.

My memory is shot though...so I may be remembering the conversation poorly.

How's about David Thompson's vertical?

reply

His probably compares to the goat. I believe Thompson had the highest leap in the history of the NBA though I dont know how high that is. Also, how high was Spud Webbs leap? He was 5'8 and he could dunk.

Ok I looked it up: Thompson 48, Spud Webb 46, Jordan 48. Some foreign guy is the current record holder at 61 named Kadour Ziani. Btw Randy Moss: 51.

reply

You do realize that Dr. J is Julius Erving right? Lol

reply

His name is Earl Manigault, and during high school when asked his name he said "Manigault" - the listener thought he said "Nanny Goat", and it stuck. Thus, "The Goat".
And yes, his vertical was rumored to have been 52 inches.

reply

No one really knows what his vertical was. A lot of the stuff that gets thrown around is legend and rumor, which tends to be embellished. Since the highest recorded vertical leaps tend to top out at about 50 inches, it's not likely that he was able to go much higher than that.

reply

I think that isn't true...Kadour Ziani's vertical leap is supposed to be almost 60 inches.

Concerning the Goat, I guess we'll never know, but it is possible he could have had a vertical leap as high as 54 inches in theory...

All I'm saying is that if something isn't documented then I tend to be skeptical. Those verticals that someone listed above are all documented. Someone actually measured them. I'm not saying The Goat could not do those things for sure, just that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

reply

Whilst 52 inches is unlikely, it's absolutely not beyond the realm of possibility.
I do agree that it's probably been inflated a bit over the years...

reply

Some people couldn't pronounce his last name right, so they start calling him the "Goat" and it just took off from there...
