Just saw the previous Ransom (1956)

I don't know why this is not considered a remake. I know they were both taken from a TV program, but if the '96 Ransom is not a remake, then why did they call it Ransom--the same as the movie done 40 years earlier?

Because both plots are identical. Rich man's son is kidnapped and held for ransom. Father refuses to pay and instead offers the money as a bounty on the kidnapper's head. Child is returned unharmed. The only difference is that in the 1956 movie, the kidnappers are not identified.
