Is this part of a trilogy? Heard good things about it, but want to make sure I start in the right place.
shareYes, but I don't think it was intended when it was made. You can easily see it as a standalone film, just like the second. The third one has a lot of characters from the first, so it's not as easy to see by itself.
Yes. It's also the first of the trilogy so it's the right place to start. Pusher II and III are even better.

shareYeah it's a trilogy, just because the stories don't link doesn't mean it isn't a trilogy, none of Sergio Leone's Dollar trilogy link, but still a trilogy nevertheless.
The first Pusher is defiantly the best.
