I remember seeing a (TV)movie in the late 80's (or perhaps up to 1991) with a (christian) mother and a small child. With a horrible scene hanging from a lamp and sexual abuse.

I don't seem to find it. ---- I don't believe "A Promise To Carolyn" and "American Crime (2007)(Sylvia Marie Likens) are it....

Does anyone know what movie is is?

You've probably figured it out by now, but the description you gave sounds quite a bit like "Sybil" with Sally Field.

I agree it sounds like Sybil but from what I remember it wasn't sexual abuse in the scene. The mother oddly would fill her bladder with water then demand she holds it in.
