Relationship between father and son

Apart from all the physical abuse the son got, did anyone else feel the fathers affection for his son was borderline sexual ?

or was is just me

Either way, this film was excellent.

reply

No, I didn't see that at all.

reply

I saw nothing like that. I thought the father's love for his son was his one redeeming feature, that lifted him above being mostly a schmuck and a loser.

reply

Nope, I didn't see that...

edit: In retrospect(and I mean this is an edit that is coming months after the original post, folks), I'm not so quick to say no to this reading. A homoerotic motive in the father's character for the son is possible(although I'd still say it's not reciprocated by the son). I'd still be inclined to think the same actions by the father could be read as both intensely familial and in the tradition of self-preservation, as well.

reply

I think it's just you.

reply

Its not just you

reply

Yes, I saw that as well. I think that that might've been part of the reason that his father beat his son so much -- guilt.

reply

I thought so. After they buried Amidu and Roger put Igor in the shower, I was afraid Roger was going to go in with. Thankfully not.

And the tickling thing was just weird.

reply

+1 to the above. Of all the potential scenarios for interaction, those two were chosen and were poignant. The camera seemed to dwell on the quiet there, especially.

Although, they were somewhat set-off by the pub scenes. The karaoke was so innocent and charming that it dispelled any previous concern. (not that I can remember the sequence of film properly)

reply

What a bizarre viewpoint. For reasons we don't know Igor's mother is not around, and obviously Igor is a good, loyal and hardworking son. Have we really got to the stage where a father's love for his son has to be translated by a bunch of clowns into something sexual? Do you believe that Homer Simpson's love for Bart has a sexual basis too?

reply

I agree Bogwart-1.

I hate to say it but it seems like a very North American attitude or way of thinking. As soon as there is any physical contact between parent and child, its looked at as something sinister. So they saw each other naked. Did you see the size of the apartment they lived in. There was no separate bathroom...

Their relationship was very different then most father, sons but I did not see anything sexual about it at all.

Saying that though, everyone is entitled to interrupt a film as they chose.

reply

No. It seems it's just you ... There's plenty (more) interesting things to say about their relationship though.

Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...

reply

The original poster has to be American.

European mothers sunbathe topless on the beach with their teenage children right next to them. There is nothing sexual about the European's lack of sexual hang-ups.

Now, regarding the sexual hang-ups of Americans...

reply

Different cultures. No need insulting all Americans because they think it strange that a father and son would stand around naked.

to the OP:
No there was absolutely nothing about that one scene that seemed sexual. It was a father helping his son to clean up.
