It didnt seem realistic for the church to be that broke

Seriously. The writers went way overboard with that plot detail. The church wasnt even in the ghetto. And if the church is so poor then how do they afford a secretary?

Churches can easily go broke. It is more common than you think. Churches get their money from those who go to church. But, people often get in the habit of not giving. They may think others will give more, they may say money is tight so they will not give for awhile & just get out of the habit. Some younger members often are not in the habit of giving so they don't give.

My husband is a deacon at our church and we have had problems with money at times.

As for the secretary many church positions are volunteer. You are not paid. Other church positions that are paid are often paid with what the church can afford.

The church in this movie is very believable when compared to the church go to.
