Malkovich role

John's role was too much like his character in "Dangerous Liaisons" for my tastes. They should have cast someone else.

He was wonderful in Color Me Kubrick! I thought he was hilarious. He was great in the PBS production of Sam Shepard's wonderful play True West ... that's the first time anyone ever saw him, I believe.

Served with the style of a real neurotic
the easy style of a true psychotic

I'm thinking the opposite: I couldn't possibly see anyone else being so evil and charming at the same time. And he doesn't do much, he can be completely still and still be malignant.
I thought it was a wonderful performance.

Charming? Really? It was a great performance, but the awful, cold, mannered ways of Osmond were clear from the start to me. But it is good that you felt you understood why Isabelle was interested in him...
I could not understnd it, unless it was in contrast to everyone she had known before, and she mistook his coldness for reserve and fine elegance

I agree with billr. Would love to have seen Gary Oldman in this role.
