Trailer Promo false

I think the trailer is all off. It’s not about remembering in your heart.
Ponnette receives a "gift" in response to her prayers.
The Promo just makes it play with secular audiences. It’s a very Christian film and addresses issue for all believers. Young children and adults give standard pat answers to a child’s (or your) questions about death and life. The gift is her answer!

It's not particulary christian at all. Much more agnostic. Despite what the
quotes chosen on here make believe...

The trailer is indeed off, but what it's off about is its claim that Ponette's aunt, friends, etc. helped her with her realization. The Christian elements in this story seem very damaging to Ponette - as even her aunt realizes a bit when Ponette's sitting out all day waiting for her mother to be resurrected. Ponette comes to grips with her mother's death despite everyone around her and their talk of god. (To be fair, her atheist/agnostic father is too trapped in his own misery to help much either.) Notice how the (imagined) apparition of her mother avoids any mention of god or heaven?

reply

I assumed the mother to be imagined as well. The whole red sweater thing, however, is a bit problematic. Ponette went from the hospital to her Aunt's house. Where could she have gotten her mother's seater. Moreover, her father confirmed that it was indeed her mother's sweater, and mentioned something about not having seen it a while. Personally, I think that the mother's appearance was meant to be allegorical. It was very surreal in any event.

reply

I would disagree. I think the mothers appearance is real. As intelligent as Ponette is, she is struggling throughout the film to find a way to go on, to move forward, to keep living really. Her mother's gives her what she couldn't find on her own, what no one else could give her. And the red sweater isn't a conundrum--it provides the real-world proof.

reply

Agreed, she was supposed to be real.

I agree with all of your comment except for the part about her mother being imagined. In fact, I think one clue to that is how noncommittal she is when Ponette talks about doing the trials with Ada. If it were Ponette's imagination, I think her mother would say something like "yes, I came back because you did those trials--good job".

I'm not sure if I think the mother was (supposed to be) imagined or not, but I don't think that clue about the trials with Ada is a strong indicator either way -- it seemed earlier on in the movie Ponette was already doubtful about Ada's claims, even saying she would stop doing them until God would speak with her. True, she wasn't immediately completely dismissive of them and of Ada, but it's illustrative of doubt, at the very least, I would say.
