Wow, this was a surprise

As I said before, Wow. This film is actually extremely well written. It just seemed to slip by mostly unnoticed as most 90's horror films were. But I actually quite enjoyed this film.

I think it suffers big time for its title and cover art. They both create the image that this is going to be Child's Play with Pinochio but it is actually a psychological roller coaster ride. Also, some parts were actually quite creepy.

The cover art and title really do a great disservice to this film. In an interview, writer/director Kevin Tenney said he titled it the "Pinochio Syndrome" but the producer wanted to change it to "Pinochio's Revenge". Go figure. Whenever there's someone on the pure business side of film making trying to make creative decisions it always ends up bad.

This movie is very unknown. I remember it growing up. From the trailer. Wanted to see it for over 15 years. Pinocchio Syndrome wouldn't of sold. That sound stupid. This movie isn't for everyone. I love it.

Lol and Pinochio's Revenge doesn't sound stupid?

reply

Not in 1996. It simple, the other title is to complex and most people wouldn't even give it a chance.

I agree had the title been called "Pinocchio's Syndrome" I would have thought it was some kind of medical movie and wouldn't have bothered renting it at all.

You do know that Child's Play did not invent the killer doll genre as there have been movies with doll killers before like Trilogy of Terror, Devil Doll, Dead of Night, Twilight Zone episodes, Magic (1978 with Anthony Hopkins), Making Contact aka Joey, Dolls etc.

I say this movie is kind of similar to Magic.

Yes I'm aware but if you want to talk about Chucky I'll say this: no other killer doll has personality like Chucky as he drives the films (at least the sequels he does). Even in the first one he is much more amusing to watch because he is a sick human being, a serial killer, trapped inside of a doll's body but that doesn't stop him from killing. He's a foul mouthed, violent serial killer who is limited because he is trapped inside of a doll's body.

This film is very similar to Magic, I agree.

Lets not forget "Talking Tina" from "Twilight Zone."

I saw first saw this on the Chiller network. Back then I rated 7/10 and did not like it enough to buy it. Then I started to work at a puppet theater. After 3 and a half years at the puppet theater, I had to watch this movie again. I ended up buying it, among other things, from Amazon. I liked it better the second time I watched it. I now rate it 10/10 and it's my favorite movie of 1996.
