man or woman?

When george is being tested and is asked the question how old a person is, why does he ask if its a man or woman? He was wanting specifics but i dont understand how that would make a difference on the age. Or maybe im over thinking myself.

reply

He was just effing with Data.

reply

He already had the basic underlying question. By asking if it was a man or women he could stall for more time while he did the calculation in his head.

reply

George asked this question because on average women live longer than men. Therefore, knowing the gender of the person would give him a clearer idea as to what his/her age is.

reply

He was asked the question, how old is a person born on specific date, time and place thats still living. The average life of men and women does not matter to the question. Seeing how smart george was, I dont see him asking a pointless question. So as the above poster stated, i think its most logical he was just stalling the question so he could think. It was the first question he asked.

The "still alive" part wasn't known when George asked the gender.

reply

The still alive age could be calculated anyway... yet if the subject had died, he would need to know when. George was exasperating the Interviewer deliberately, rather than make assumptions.... thus the man/woman question.

reply

While everything else George threw at Commander Data in that scene to make him understand about "specifics" was warranted in order to give a perfectly correct answer, I felt he asked the "man or woman" part (which was George's FIRST comeback) was to begin to stress his point about specifics. While each part of specificity might not be relevant to provide a correct answer, the more specifics one states the better chance of getting the best answer possible.

reply

I think it was just so he could begin his answer correctly with either he or she.

reply

Assuming the writer didn't make a mistake, I think George asks "man or a woman" to remind the interviewer to be specific, since George had just pointed out the importance of being specific and since George wants to play with the interviewer's question which is boringly easy to George. By this time George is tired of the tests, especially silly ones, and wants to go home.
