I guess she spent that time on the way to the island figuring out what it was that she believed in. It did seem kinda weird how she developed that sort of sisterly bond/protective instinct when the pirates arrived.

I felt the only reason she turned when she thought she was going to be raped and needed new allies to protect her. She probably also didn't like the idea of men forcing themselves on women or using women since she had an all women crew. I doubt she turned her life around at the end.
