Phantom with Sala (Catherine Zeta Jones)

Did Phantom end up with Sala (Catherine Zeta Jones)? He seems to like her more than Kristy Swanson.

reply

God no. Of course he ends up with Swanson, are you mad?

Somehow from the movie, there seems to be stronger love sparks between Phantom with Sala (Catherine Zeta Jones) than with Swanson. Furthermore, Sala was more beautiful right?

reply

I really don't like Swanson, but I'm no fan of Jones either. Billy Zane deserved a better love interest. All power to Billy Zane ( you might not understand this but Mr Zane is the last hope of Hollywood).

reply

I think that Treat Williams is the last hope of Hollywood,but... :)

reply

I can see that too, hun. It does seem like they have a spark, but maybe thats just because Sala was way more pretty then Diane. Sala, I think, should have ended up with Quill, I'm not sure why really? But they just seem to have been the closest, I could see them having fun on the side lol (sorry i write at fanfiction.net, so i am like always writing and continuing on stories from movies! lol) -V.J

No way, Sala will never ended up with Diane. Are you talking about the nerd guy?

It was hard to believe that after this movie came out, who would have thought that Catherine Zeta Jones would end up becoming a famous movie star 2 years later in 1998 in The Mask of Zorro, huh? I liked her performance in The Phantom.

I read the Phantom comic books, and the Phantom's love interest is Diana Palmer, played by Kristy Swanson in the movie. So its obvious that the Phantom's love for Diana was in this movie. I guess to some people, it wasn't effectively done.

reply

Actually, in Norway, the name of Phantoms girlfriend is Sala not Diana. That's why the Catherine Zeta Jones carakter is named Sala, just for us noregians...
And Devil is called "Ulv", the norwegian word for Wolf.

***That's why the Catherine Zeta Jones carakter is named Sala, just for us noregians...***

Not quite, they are not that cool. Sala is an actual characther from the comic.

In one of the earlier Phantom stories, called "airpirates" or something like that, the phantom encounters, you guessed it, airpirates.
One of these is Sala, the characther wich is played by Zeta Jones in the movie. The Phantom briefly dated Sala for a period, before he met Diana Palmer and dated and later married her.
The moral fanatic norwegian editor at the time did not like "den slags rundbrenderi", and CHANGED Diana's name to Sala. By now Sala palmer is established as his wife and it is to late to change it back to the original Diana Palmer.
The same goes for Devil. The before mentioned moral fanatic editor didn't like the name Devil, and called him Ulv in norwegian. That too, is so established it can't be changed.
This extreme moralism is a tragic chapter in norwegian history. Luckily we are above that level now.

reply

Why do you attribute this name change to morality? Just curious.

reply

Because it is a publicly known fact (among norwegian fans anyway).
There never was any mystery to it.

reply

Not being Norwegian, I would appreciate being educated as to where does the crisis of morality that prompted the name change reside.

Cheers and thanks,

Ps. On a tangent, has the Oresund bridbe connecting Malmo with Denmark been completed? I realize this does not involve Norway in any way, but thought you might know. :)

reply

Certainly!

I copied the explanation from a couple of posts ago, but this time around the crucial sentence is in english, last time it only was in norwegian. Sorry about that.

The moral fanatic norwegian editor at the time did not like that sort of wifeswapping, he feared what sort of influence such a playboy portrayed as a hero would have on the young. In order to make The phantom seem like more of a family man, he CHANGED Diana's name to Sala. That way he intended to make the airpirate Sala and Diana Palmer into the one and same person.
By now Sala Palmer is established as the phantoms wife, and it is to late to change it back to the original Diana Palmer.

The same goes for Devil. The before mentioned moral fanatic editor didn't like the name Devil, he couldn't live with that sort of unchristianity, and called him Ulv (Wolf)instead. That too, is so established it can't be changed.
This extreme moralism is quite pathetic and a tragic chapter in norwegian history. Hell, even "Life of Brian" was banned in Norway when it was first released by the same sort of people.

Luckily we are above that level now. Now everything goes.

P.S: I don't know exactly when the Ă–resund bridge was finished, but finished it is. It has been there for years. I drove over it myself two years ago ;p

Thanks for the explanation! There's a lot of us who know very little about Norwegian things. It seems a little sad, though that morality was such a scourge to Norwegian society. How so?

The Phantom is the first movie I ever saw Catherine Zeta Jones in, and I thought she was fantastic. A brunette actress to rival all those blondes! With her beauty and her sense of humor she really outshone Kristy Swanson. And she was great in this action role--loved those boots! (Just compare her to Geena Davis as that woman pirate in Cutthroat Island.)

I wish she would do another role like this!

reply

So that's why they made her British, not Norwegian? Riiiiggght

reply

Blond and brunette. Chocolate and vanilla swirl. Throw in a redhead, and he can have neopolitan.

reply

I'm still confused why Sala changed sides. Maybe she realised Drax was insane and decided to do the right thing.
