The ending is pretty harsh. I mean the phantom went to all that trouble and jumped through all those hoops for Diana only to get rejected and friendzoned in the end. I was kind of hoping he would've again brought up the saying "nobody rejects the phantom" and either demanded a*s, cash or grass in return for his services.
He didn't get rejected. She left to go back home and the ending voiceover (from the perspective of the Phantom's dad) said she reconciled in her heart that she would return to Bengalla.

Yeah the voiceover hints that she *might* come back, but the voiceover is by P. McGoohan, which is basically voices in the Phantom's own head. Basically she left to new york and is partying her socks off and having sex with random strangers on a regular basis while the Phantom is left alone in the jungle in the friendzone wondering what went wrong and hoping she'll come back some time in the next 20 years.
