i thought albert was either anna's step-father or her mother's boyfriend because of the way she called him by his first name.

Since Anna called him Albert and the girls called him Grandpa, I assumed he was Anna's stepfather. Also later in the movie, Anna's mother refers to herself as MRS. Morris, so she's apparently married. I suppose it's possible Albert could be a long term live in boyfriend, but I don't get the impression Anna's mother would have been into that, she seemed kind of prim and proper, like the type of person who embraced more traditional values. I also think it's sad that Albert seemed to have more care and concern for Anna than her own mother seemed to. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought it was Albert who was her father and Faye Dunaway's character was the stepmother.
