...Let me enlighten both of you.
A "palooka" is a term for a "stupid or clumsy person".
Hence the title > Palookaville.

It may also be a reference to the dialog in the back of the car between Marlon Brando and Rod Steiger in "On The Waterfront" where Brando says 'He gets a shot at the title and I get a one-way ticket to Palookaville."

It's a fictitious place, a concept. It's where perennial losers go to reside and live out their days.

Guys...gotta tell ya..this post is killing me. I work next to Jersey City, which is where my family comes from. There's definately no Palookaville. I drove William Forsythe into NYC on Sunday and when I asked him what films of his he could recommend, mentioned this movie. I'm definately going to look for it.

It IS a reference to this piece of dialogue. Anyone who hasn't seen 'On The Waterfront' yet should see it without any further ado!

The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery.

Basically palooka = losers who can't catch any break like the characters in the film and in real life too.

reply

it is absolutely a reference to the line from the famous "I coulda been a contender" speech from "On the Waterfront" --as a previous post suggested.

reply

I think Palooka refers specifically to an inept boxer, as opposed to just an inept person, as in Joe Palooka.
