DVD Release?

Any DVD release of this series out yet?

reply

I keep bombarding the BEEB for info but they are tight lipped.

reply

I'd like to help - whom are you bombarding specifically?

reply

Bombard BBC enterprises and BBC worldwide distribution.

reply

There certainly should be a DVD. "Over Here" was one of the Beeb's absolutely best 2-part mini-series ever. It is hilarious, bittersweet, historical, brilliantly acted and directed - in short has everything a successful DVD needs to make a name for itself. I saw it on BBC TV in 1996 when I lived in the UK; as I remember it came along with very little advance fanfare, and was never repeated. I've since looked for it on BBC dvd sites, on Virgin, on Google, and it just seems to have vanished - almost as if BBC top management had a hate on for somebody connected with the production.

Other IMDb threads have suggested we should write the BBC to say that a DVD of this little jewel would be welcome. Write to the BBC? How antedeluvian. What ever happened to market research? Can't they search the web to find out what people are asking about? Why don't they use a "Web spider" or hire Google to find out what in their archives would have a chance at making them a few Pounds if re-released? "Over Here" is definitely one of the best films they ever produced. We know this; why don't they know this?

Perhaps if the TV license fee were cut in half they might get a bit more lively "over there".

I noticed on Amazon.co.uk there is a dvd called Over Here due for release on June 11 2007.
There are no details attached to the item but it sounds like this one.......keep an eye out.

reply

Its actually available for pre-order, its nor released until 30/9/07

Check out Amazon.co.uk, who now have an advert for DVD pre-release order, due in September 2007. HOWEVER, one can only ASSUME it is the BBC (Martin Clunes) version because Amazon (in their stupidity - or for some other, unfathomable reason) give no details other than its being a "Cinema Club" release.
Intriguingly though, there is a "Customer Review", giving the product five stars; yet this reviewer does not supply the important clue (or should I say Clunes !!)

reply

I to have e-mailed the BBC but no joy. I suppose the problem being as Over Here featured some then unknowns who have gone on to bigger things (Tony Curran, Andrew Lincoln) . So, this means profits will be down as they take their cut which is a shame as this was a great show. Lets just hope the Over Here on Amazon is this one!!

reply

I have just looked on amazon.co.uk and the over here for pre order has completely disappeared! Does anyone have the faintest idea what's going on?

reply

I loved this when it was on for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. I still keep an eye out for it on similar anniversaries (11th Novemember, VE Day, VJ Day etc)to see if it is ever repeated. No luck since I saw it this once. A DVD release would be most welcome and would sit nicely next to Band of Brothers.

reply

Yes, the DVD of this is being released Oct, in other words, from next week!

I have already pre-ordered it on Amazon.co.uk, so if you are all still interested, shoot along and order your own copy! Great!!

reply

It's no longer showing up on Amazon... Weird... Been trying to get hold of a copy of this for years and now it's disappered again!!

reply

Hi,

That is strange! I just checked my order with Amazon, which I placed on the 8th July, and it still says that it is to be delivered along with a lot of other dvds between 2-5 Oct, ie, next week.

I will see what happens and let you know... a bit disconcerting as they have received my payment at the start of this month...

Thanks for letting me know that.

Roger

Further to your message, I just emailed Amazon and will post here what their reply is when I get it.

Just checked amazon, no sign of this at all - what a shame.

Typical BBC ! (They're sitting on all the Spike Milligan Q series too !!!!)

reply

Sadly, further developments have arisen, specifically, an email from Amazon dated yesterday, the gist of which follows:

"We are sorry to report that the release of the following item has been
cancelled:

"Over Here"

This item has now been cancelled from your order and we can confirm that
you have not been charged for it.

Please accept our apologies for any disappointment or inconvenience
caused."

Don't know what to do now, they have had me believing that it was ordered for delivery last month since the summer!

Also cannot understand the BBC with their quality products, another title which has immense nostalgic value on the war years is another BBC play called "A Foreign Field", which I only got by ordering the DVD in ntsc format, as the BBC have never released it in UK PAL format! A complete travesty...

Sorry to be the bearer to all of bad news on this excellent screenplay...

So as you can see, there is definitely a plan to get the play back on the market, but no timetable as such...

It might help if all interested email customer services as to their wishes to obtain a copy on DVD?

Anyway, a Merry Christmas to all from me, at least!

You maybe have managed to get a copy of Over Here by now considering the date of your original post but I have found the following website that sells multi-region copies of rare TV shows and films and I have myself ordered a copy. I first saw it when I was sixteen and I have been trying to get a copy ever since.

Hope this helps

reply

Hi,
I would really like to get a copy myself, but am very wary about unknown internet sources. Can you tell me, did you receive it, quickly, safely, and was the payment smooth, (were there any oddities on your card account at a later date?)

Thanks
