Stephanie,
It actually is based on a true story. The people it is based on are friends of mine. Their real names are Roger and Karen. They used to live in a small town called Decherd, just outside of Winchester, TN. They've since moved nearer their son in KY.

Did Karen's mom act the same way as Eva? If so, did she ever get what she deserved for her crime?

reply

CEH- you've asked a couple of times about Eva's "Crime"-

While it might be sad what happened to Julie- that was VERY common practice in the past- sending a daughter out of town to "a private school" or some other excuse to have the baby in secret, then give the baby up... While it may have been heartbreaking, it was legal-

I mean did she ever get scorned by people she knew or had her husband walked out on her for what she did.

reply

Yes it's true, back in the older days young girls were sent away to have their babies. Abortions were'nt legal and alot of families feared the shame. My aunt was sent away to a home to have her baby but for whatever reason ended up keeping him. It was not considered a crime since the girls are still minors.

Have there ever been cases where society finds out what they did to their daughters and shun them for it? What's this like today?

reply

My grandmother gave up her eldest daughter because she got pregnant at 18 and couldn't marry my grandfather because he was still married. Her parents made her go to Hawaii and give her baby up to her childless Aunt and Uncle. After my grandfather's divorce was finalized, he married my grandmother and they had two children together. None of us knew about my eldest Aunt until much later, and at the time, it was very scandalous to have a child out of wedlock or to even be single mom at the time. Both of which my grandmothers did. Now, it's much more common and expected.

What spugh-3 said is not true. The movie is based (rather loosely) on the story of Mark Kitts, who was also a co-producer (see article). His name was changed to Scott in the movie. He lives in North Carolina and is an associate pastor at a church I used to attend. Mark and his wife both make cameo appearances in the church choir near the beginning of the movie.
