Kevin Harris

The poor guy .. I do feel for him, having waited ten years for Julie to accept his proposal.
However, I'm glad she let him go. It would have been a disservice to Kevin if Julie had stayed with him once Steve had reappeared.
Nobody saw it coming, so it's not Julie's fault she felt she couldn't marry Kevin after all. It may have come across in a somewhat icy fashion but I think she did the right thing; cancelling before anything went further.

All those years of passively letting her path be dictated by guilt, well-meaning relatives, etc etc .. and her heart just never really settled. I can't even imagine how it felt to hear of Scott, then Steve!!

"Would you be willing to help us find Steve Carson?"

... just.. WOW.

Agreed. She didn't love Kevin. It would have been unfair to both of them if the relationship had gone any further.

I feel a little bad for him, but he was also asking her to give up her job (which she loved) so that he could "take care of her." I'd have dumped him for that.

I'm coming into this discussion years later, but having just watched the movie again for the uncountedeth time, I did what I usually do: read reviews about what I just saw, and found this page .. I believe it used to be the IMDB forums. YAY, they're not gone!!! I missed these comments.

Kevin was a nice guy, a devoted man who *should* represent the ideal husband. If Scott hadn't returned, perhaps Julie would've spent their years making the best of it, finding some good times here and there ... learning to appreciate him, blah blah blah .. but feeling for the rest of her life that she'd settled.
.. and that's truly not a future she would wish for anybody, especially a good fellow like Kevin, who wanted nothing more than to spoil her forever.
